Engine cranks but won't start until the 4th or 5th try

It has been a while since my 1995 GLE fired right up after sitting over night. The car cranks, therefore, not an ignition switch issue. On the 2nd or 3rd attempt it will sputter to about 200 rpm and after that I generally need to give the car some gas (steady pressure on the pedal). The plugs were changed with no resolution of symptoms. The resistance on all the injectors was tested and I replaced two of the six with no resolution of symptoms. The fuel filter has been changed with no resolution of symptoms. Back in 2004 the computer gave me an error code for the IACV/ACCV but I did nothing and the code went away. The problems all date back to 2004 and have progressivley gotten worse. Could it be the Idle Air Control Valve or the throttle position sensor? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

could be the IAC, but I would also check for residual fuel pressure which should be present even first thing in the AM

Thanks for the advice on the fuel pressure. I questioned this myself several years ago and still to this day wait for the pump to stop before turning the car over. The car runs normal once started (no hesitations on acceleration or deceleration).

I would say crankshaft Positioning sensor on the bell housing of the tranny... my friends 99 max did the same thing cranks but wont start until you crank it a couple times.. some times we even have to pop start it ... after about 2 months, it finally threw a code and we replaced the Crankshaft pos sensor and now starts right up

You have a cold start issue.
Check the resistance of the coolant temp sensor.

Idle air control valves have little to do with temperature related starting issues.

Also check the Camshaft position sensor (it's on the timing chain cover, easy to access)

my car had cold start issues.. was crank pos sensor by the oil drain. its easy to test with an ohm meter... if you need the resistance i can get my haynes manual for you.

The problem is the throttle position sensor. Mine did this too and it turned out after checking/replacing everything else that the TPS was flaky. It had inconsistent resistance readings and never had the same reading at closed throttle and sometimes it was WAY off when cold.

For a while I was able to get past the problem by pressing the gas pedal to the floor and letting off a few times before even putting the key in. Since the TPS is a variable resistor this just swipes the connections back and forth enough to clean things up a bit and the car would start on the first try with nothing else done.

If this helps solve your problem then replace your TPS.

I'd try cleaning your throttle body and idle air control valve if you haven't already done so. It only takes a few minutes to clean out and it is something you can do yourself to save a few $$.

TPS read out fine yesterday. Cleaned the TB and IACV but the problem did not go away. I have to admit my wife drives this car and I actually bike everywhere since moving to Los Angeles (left the 1991 maxima in storage). So, with that said I noticed the ignition hesitating when trying to start the car. I cleaned the crude off the postitive battery post and the iginition still hesitated every 3rd or 4th try. So this led me to beleive the ignititon switch was failing so I repelaced the switch and the the car fires up with no problems. Part was $33 at Autozone. Thanks to all that repleid.
