Possible alternator problem

Hey Guys,

Need your help really bad. Yesterday while playing my sounds all my abs & voltage lights came on. At the same time there was a power dip & my front headlights blew out. By luck i was close to a family member house. After turning the car off and on again, the lights went away. I then installed new headlights and tried driving it again. At about half a block into the drive, the abs light came on again, my dash gauges got brighter than usual and my headlights went out again. After that I parked the car in the driveway and let it sit. I sounds like possible an overcharging alternator but is there anything else that could be making this happen. Thanks for all replys.

I did not do anything to the car before this happened. Is there a place that can do an alternator test while it is on the car?

It's the alt. Mine did the same thing. The regulator is shot and it's sending surges through the system.

Yeah, playing it pretty loud also. When the dash lights came on my sounds went out. It then came back on but I had no regular headlights. One of the highbeams worked though. Changed the headlights and the abs light came on again and both high & low beams were gone.

I was leaning toward heavily toward the alt causing the problem. Do you think driving it a short distance to get it checked would cause any problems? Also, what is the best brand alt to replace it with (1997 GLE)? Thanks for all the responses.

OEM

Since you have a '97, you might be eligible for a replacement alternator under the alternator recall for '97 and some '98 Max's. Might want to check w/ your dealer to see if your Max is affected

I have one for sale on 4th gen for sale forum. There are cheaper Alts out there, but OEM quality can't be beat.

i have a similar problem my abs and trac light came on speakers cut out. i accelerated they went off and the bat and brake light came on. then kinda flickered and went off then the speakers came back on. and it drove normal. now this is first time that its happened like that ocasionally the abs light will flicker and more occasionally the bat and brake light will come on at startup and will go away after a few min of driving. im leaning towards alt but is the voltage regulator seperate from the alt or is it all integrated in the alt. oh yah its a 99 max se 198k

Bumped a 5 month old thread when you could've just posted in the newbie thread...

It's an integrated part of the alternator, just like most every other alternator made for the last 15 years.

Replace the alternator, problem solved.

Yeah, this is an old thread. Forgot to post my results when the alt was changed. I had the same problems that you have. Tested the voltage with the car running and it was jumping between 17.5v - almost 19v. Take their advise like I did and change the alt before something gets damaged
