Water Pump Replacement Q - Coolant Draining

When draining the coolant to replace the water pump does the coolant from the block really need to to be drained too?

Meaning, do I need to pull the two block drain plugs in addition to pulling the radiator and water pump plugs?

I didn't but I sure did lose a lot of coolant when I pulled the pump. Quite a mess. I wanted to drain the block to help reduce this but I couldn't reach the plugs.

i was thinking (hoping, more like) that pulling the water pump drain plug might take care of that.

Yeah, that water pump drain plug didn't do a whole lot for me. Oh well.

I think some coolant went into the oil when I replaced it, so I drained and replaced the oil too. No worries - coolant and oil are relatively cheap.
