How much should I pay for a ABS speed sensor?
How much should I pay for a ABS speed sensor?
How much should I pay for an ABS speed sensor for 98 SE right front.
I've had quotes from $60 up to $280. I'm leaning towards the 60 buck option.
...oh, and one Beeehhhllll-yuhn dollars isn't the answer

the speed sensors are expensive. reason being is you can't find them used since they're almost impossible to pull from a junkyard without destroying them, so new is really the only way to go. (you could also pull an entire wheel assembly of a maxima from a junkyard-you may want to price that?) 60 bucks is going to be the cheapest IMO.
Speaking from experience....
When I did my first wheel bearing, I didn't know the ABS sensor would break so I ended up smashing that one and had to buy a new one (dealer only) it was $165. Next bearing went bad and then another bad one - turns out the knuckle was out of round. So I ended up buying a whole knuckle from a junkyard for $100 - speed sensor included.

From the "How the he!! did I get here" archive:
So, the max got curbed a little bit and it bent the control arm and steering knuckle. So the CA and steering knuckle were replaced at the body shop.
When I got the car back from the body shop, the ABS light was on. I complained that it wasn't like that when I dropped it off -- what was the problem? He fumbled around with the OBD-II reader (which should have been a clue -- the OBD-II reader won't read the ABS computer), couldn't clear the code of course and said he bring the car back "on Monday" to have the code cleared.
Ok, so by this point I'm not really interested in leaving the car there *again*. So I come here, check the procedure for reading the ABS code (THANKS .ORG!!), pull the code, and it gives me a 21 -- front right speed sensor, open circuit. I try to clear, no good. try again, no good. So it looks like the RF ABS speed sensor is kaput.
So I jack up the car, pull the wheel, check that the sensor is there (yes), check the wiring (plugged in), check the resistance -- open circuit, Whup, there's the problem.
So I get the old knuckle out (ALWAYS! ask for your old parts back) and I start looking at it a little more closely, and I notice the area around the ABS SS hole looks like it got really hot -- nice shiny grey metal, no rust, no paint, hmmm. Could this be my superior threshhold braking prowess causing the SS to overheat? Naw, no way. Could this be he removed the old ABSSS from the knuckle with a torch?? More likely.
That would explain the ABS SS not working, now wouldn't it. Well and truly krispy cooked.
So I call the guy up and say, hmmm, I've been looking at this ABS problem and it looks like the old knuckle got pretty hot. Why do you think that is. Duh, dunno. Ok, and why does it look like it got hot right around the ABS SS hole? And he says, oh yeah, that's right, I used a torch to remove the old SS. And I said, dooya think ya coulda mentioned that before I spend 2 hours doing diag to find a bad ABS SS ya burnt with the torch...
Knucklehead.
So yesterday, I ordered a new ABS SS from some parts supplier off ebay. $65 shipped. 1 year guarantee. Should be here in a couple of days. Not too painful.
But ya didn't think that was the end of the story, didja...
This morning on the way to work, the light suddenly goes off and I have ABS again. Go figure. A thremally-resistant, self-repairing ABS SS from the factory!! What a delight
Anyone want a new ABS SS? I can make you SUCH a deal.

I've also read if you try to remove the old one from the outside of the hub...good luck getting all of it. It's almost impossible so you have to remove the assembly and go at it from the inside as well.
