Lowered the car B+G/KYB GR2's, major improvement

I installed the B+G springs and the KYB GR2's sunday.. It took almost 3 hours.. First of all, buy the rear boots.. I screwed up and only bought the front boots, bearings, and spacers.. The rear boots were separated in three places... They were shot!!! The car does sit at least a quarter inch lower in the rear.. Sagging effect??? I do have a sub and amp but its not that heavy... As far as handling, it's a somewhat rougher ride but very little body roll when you take a corner hard. Very stable when your cornering.. At highway speeds, its nice and tight.. No more Greyhound bus ride.. Never knew switching lanes could be so much fun.. I researched this thread in what to buy, and bearings, struts, and spacers were usually the mentioned items.. I guess since the rear boots are $22 each, it was not really recommended too much.. I wish I would have checked.. Overall, very happy with the B+G/KYB setup....

He put the GR2 strut in. There are no adjustments on the GR2's.

I have the AGX's here's what I've found so far...

1 front & 3 rear - Realy nice tight smooth highway cruise ride.

2 front & 4 rear - Really tight setup, excellent handling, very sporty and pretty smooth on the highway.

Any higher then 2 & 4 is going to be a very tight ride.

I have my B&G's but haven't picked struts yet. If you had to do it again and had your pick of struts, would you go with GR-2 or AGX?

Not sure who you're asking.. I went with the GR2's because I did it mainly for the cost.. I wanted to lower the car mainly for looks and the improved handling was a bonus.. I think they're the best for the money.. $56 per shock, $72 per strut.. OEM cost way more than that..
I dont plan on joining the SCCA, but if I did road course racing, than the AGX would be my choice...

I'm still on 15" OEM.. 215/60/15 Dunlop A2.. Actually, wheels are my next and final purchase.. I know, most people do the wheels first but I wanted engine performance first.. I'm probably going to 17" so the handling will only get better but the ride will be rougher I imagine..

Well, I went from 15" to 18", and yeah the ride is considerably rougher. But not too bad. Get some quiet tires though.

First of all, 3 hours is very commendable. It took me close to 6 hours to do my B&G Springs.

Your rear springs...did you install them with the "B+G Springs" lettering straight (readable) or upside down. I found that the only way the rear springs will seat well, is to install them with the lettering upside down.!! Did you have similar problems?

Thx.

I installed the springs with the lettering up.. Thats how the OEM springs are set up.. I think it goes wider from the top to smaller at the bottom.... In fact, we almost put it in the other way but corrected it after looking at the OEM spring.. Didnt have any problems.. No noise at all.. One of my bearings was shot so good thing I replaced both of them.. I had a mechanic do the install on the side, with my help.. Thats why it didnt take too long..

Uh OH! I just hope I did not install the rear springs upside down.
When I compared the OEM springs, it the upside-down version looked correct, however, the lettering suggested otherwise.

I dunno...
Does anyone know whether installing springs upside-down (assuming I did) is BAD?

I'm 99% sure the tighter coils are supposed to be at the top. Sprint would know this for sure...

yes my friend you are 100% correct..

if anyone reading this thread has installed your springs with the tighter coils on the bottom.. please un-install the suspension now.. and turn them around.. you will blow your struts in no time.

The tighter coils need to be at the top that way it supports the weight of the car to stop travel towards the ground... its a rebound effect. If done to the rear you will not notice it as much due to the rear of the car having less travel, however going over large bumps if done to the front.. you will experience the underbody of the car hitting the ground.. soon enough .. blow struts..

always remember.. tighter coils on top.. thats where the weight of the car is coming down..

good catch weasel..

Uh OH!! Is there any way to find out if the tighter coils are on top or not. If I lift the car on both ends, will I be able to tell the difference between tighter and softer coils? What should I be looking for.

Also, there is a slight "bouncy" feeling when there are a couple 180lb guys sitting in the back seat. Is this normal or are those my struts complaining?! My springs were put on about 3 weeks ago...

you could try that.. but i am not sure if that will accurately tell you if the smaller coils are on top.. you might hve to pull the strut out of the car and loosen up the bolt and look that way
