Heater spontaneously blows cold air, turns on/off

I have a 99 with the digital climate control for the record. When I set it on 85 degrees, the air is much too cool for my liking. What can I do to check everything is in working order? Thank you.

Make sure there's no air trapped in the cooling system. A lot of times if you messed around with the cooling system or even if the coolant level dropped below the minimum mark, it would suck in some are and might be difficult for it to escape at it'll give some strange side effects like not blowing hot air or blowing hot air intermittently. Does this happen when the car is cold or all the time even after warm up?

When the car is cold, AC controller detected large temperature delta between the Ambient Temp sensor (in the nose) and Interior Temp sensor ( on the dash) then waits until the car warms up before going to high fan.

You can check the Ambient Temp sensor operation by pressing the AMB button on the dash. There is a sensor diagnostic mode outlined in the FSM.

Well I know the heat wont work as soon as I turn the car on. But this happens after driving for a while after the car has warmed up. I dunno if it has anything to do when I go WOT or not...

Maybe the mix door motor is failing.

check your coolant level, that would be the easy fix before you start digging into more difficult things

There is a diagnostic mode for the mixed door in the FSM as well.

Although this thread is about A/C, it talked about checking the mixer door also.

I had a similar problem with my heater cranked up max but it was blowing cold air and the heater was... so I thought spontaneously turning on and off.

To correct my problem was my coolant level was too low and once I topped it up it was blowing hot air again.

For the heater turning on and off it was because I had a loose connection on the passenger side where the blower motor is connected. Underneath the glove box. I only found out because my girlfriends feet kepted knocking the damn connector! Once I cleaned the connector and taped it up, it fixed it from turning on and off...

Ok, heres the deal

I added more coolant (just picked up the pre mixed prestone from oreileys)

Half of the gallon went in there!!! then again I dont think its ever been changed or messed with like flush/ or even topping off. car has is about to hit 100k miles. we had it since 60k

How the hell did that happen? does that mean the engine is ever so SLIGHTlY burning coolant?

Do you have heat now since you topped up?.. and with no visible leakage it could be burning in the combustion chamber. Get it block and pressure tested.

Also there could have been some air trapped in the system when you added coolant the first time thus the big loss so quick. Check it again. You may still have a slow leak

Keep an eye out on that oil. It's got water in it if it's cloudy. I have an engine blew up from a head gasket leak. Water is critical for these aluminum engines.
