New Project: Remote Start Kit for $19 (link included)

I was wondering if anyone has installed a remote start for their cars. In any case, the kit can be bought here for $19. Anyone feeling ambitious enough to do a DIY guide for it?

Looks like you might have to buy the extra $25 universal alarm bypass as well; unless you don't have an alarm at all.

Yes, many people have installed their own remote starts.

There's no real need for a DIY. You look at the wire color chart for your remote start unit, find the wire color and location for the OEM wire, and splice in as necessary.

In any case, $20? You get what you pay for.

That's for a NATS type system, which you don't have to worry about unless you're a '99.

4th gen max's are easy to do. The hardest part is going into the driver door for lock/unlock. If you're not doing keyless entry then you wont need to worry about that.

I recommend only tackling the install if you have at least some proper experience with electrical work.

pmohr is right! you get what you pay for! Install is not hard, but you will find in the long run that it was a waste of time and money. You will be changing batteries in your remote so often thinking what is wrong with it when it doesn't start, or that you have to stand right next to the car to start it. Have it installed professionally!!! They have all sorts of different packages and prices for remote starts. But the point I am getting at is any trouble, go right back to the place that installed it. Just trying to save you some frustration, and headaches.

Agreed, I've heard a lot of horror stories about the cheap remote starts. Do yourself a favor and get something like Viper or clifford (DEI products) you'll end up spending less in the long run because you won't have to redo it.

+1 to using quality parts. Viper and compustar make a good product.....more expensive initially yes, but you wont end up spending money down the road replacing brains and remotes.

DEI FTW.

Got mine for $70 shipped on here back in '05, still loving it. http://forums.maxima.org/group-deals...9-shipped.html

I agree you get what you pay for, for sure. If your soul purpose is to just have remote start (and you're not too worried about security), then go with the $69 deal Pmohr found. If you're more conserned about security and you want the feature of a remote start, buy a good alarm. I am also a fan of DEI, they make (own) several different models (make circutry for most companies) and they have a good rep / name. Makes for good customer service if the time ever comes.
