for those who want a new floor layout for your trunk. (QUICK write up)
for those who want a new floor layout for your trunk. (QUICK write up)
iono. i am bored.. so i decided to give you guys a mini write up on a new floor for your trunk. This is a quick write up, so don't expect many pointers here. because this idea is self explanitory... but oh well... pictures are to follow after the write up to ease the project. and sorry if i am not being sescriptive.. writing is a weakness of mine, but ima try.. so please enjoy this...
of course, we all know our trunk inside is pretty hollow down there. and VERY uneven..
anyways.. here are the tools required for the weekend, weekday, holiday, Mothers day, something day project.
your gonna need:
1 x power drill
Scissors
fabrc chalk of some sort
MANY LONG SELF TAPING SCREWS that can cut through wood and metal...
1 x 5x8 3/5" MDF at lowes... cost around 21 bucks? get 2 if u screw up..
1 x 30-40 bucks of black carpet, or whichever color and carpet you prefer...
2-4 x Some kind of product to glue the carpet down to your finished
Some type of electric saw, cutting table, or hacksaw.. if you are that patient...
piece... i used staples... but oh well... you can use them.. i prefer glue.
TIME
Patience
NO NEED FOR BEERS.. you need to focus, so drink soda's for now..
and something to eat..
MINUS THE G/F or Wife...
NO PETS..
ok, now that you got the tools needed lets begin
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ok, open up your trunk lid and take a look inside... get rid of the beer bottles, golf bags, forgotten groceries, anything dead, speakers, amps, shoes, clothes.. or for short.. get rid of ANYTHING that is in your trunk... now that your trunk is clean of trash, you should see your floor cover.. most of you should have the original trunk floor cover inside.. use that to trace out the floor for your new trunk layout on the wood. but be sure when you do that, please use common sense that you will need to be sure that when you cut it, it is not gonna be backwards when you put it in.. because the inside of our trunk compartment IS NOT symetrical.. now that you cut out your 'floor' don't you just want to throw it inside to see how it will look?
oh well, hate to break it to ya, but it will not fit..... you gonna have to cut it in half for it to fit.. now.. put the cut peice on the ground as if you are gonna put it inside the car.. Now, just cut is in half across horizontally.. be sure you come close to the center as possible when you cut it across. now that you have done that, be sure everything is out of the trunk.. so it is BARE.. now that you have done that.. take the top half of the cut piece, and fit it up against the wall of so calle backseats.. then put the other half in.. You should notice that it sinks in towards the spare tire, well, that is where you will make a foundation to support the new floor. For those of you who are wondering, this IS going to make your spare tire USELESS.. unless you jerry rig it up someway so that you have acess to it somehow. but anyway.. make an wasy foundation to soppurt the new floow. get the new floor out, and lay it aside.. now just lay wood pieces across the trunk floor, and be sure that the new floor can com into contact with the foundation. easiest thing to do is find some wood thick enough to fill in the gap between the floor of the trunk and the new floor you are making. mount them on the sides of the spare tire edges. (see pictures) now take your screws and screw them into the floor. not to tight now.. now take your new floor and piece it together in your trunk. you should be able to push down on the new floor and it should be kinda stiff.. and NOT sink in. now if you think you are satisfied with the fit. you have the option to make changes from here, or go ahead and screw the pieces into the car. if i was you, i start by each corner, and then gradually add screws in near the spare tire.. DO NOT screw anything onto the spare tire, because of 1) you will blow the thing, 2) you will have nothing for it to hang onto.. and 3) why? anyways.. nowthat you have your screws in... go find your old floor cover.. and then get the new carpet and lay the old carpet cover on top of the new carpet.. and trace out the outline of the cover onto the new carpet.. once done, cut out the tracing around the new carpet. now that you have cut it out, go ahead and lay it atop the new floor board you made. it should be a perfect and "clean" fit. now if you are completely satisfied with your cut.. go ahead and staple or glue down the carpet. OK..
now that you have made your new trunk and got the carpet on... there you have it, a new clean floor board for your trunk... pics below... and again i'm sorry for so many run on sentences.. but yeah you guys get the idea.. so hope you guys like the quick write up. and sorry about the pictures.. i wish i took the pictures of when i did the install.. but yeah..
and about the wood at the spare tire was for the new amp i was putting in there.. you have an option to do this... but yeah.. i hope this may help you guys if you plan on doing this..

enjoy

Not a bad idea.
For a rough reference for how much carpet you'll need:

Dirty as hell, I know.
Also I'd recommend putting RTV on the screws before you screw them through any body parts, and try to get RTV on the bottom of them as well (or spray them with POR-15 or something) to help prevent rusting at those spots.

The spot for the amp is an awesome touch, and looks really practical because you can still put stuff in over top of it, and you don't have to worry about something loose smashing up the amp. Kudos for the pics too!
I'm gonna have to try something similar, only may add a hinged section to access the spare, and maybe a couple of tie-down strips for my toolboxes. I keep two toolboxes in the back seat floorboard (pass+driver side), because this is the only place where they can't slide around and get tipped over. They weigh about 50 pounds apiece, so good heavy plywood should support them good. If I get around to it I'll post pics and give prop to Leo for the idea!
I replaced my crap stock 'cardboard' looking thing with 1/8" plywood years ago, because my jacks and jackstands, toolbox, etc kept sliding down towards the spare.
