Swapping Speedometer...

If I put a different speedometer in my car (white face to black) same make and model, are there any setting I need to take care off? I know the millage will be different but can I also adjust that to my cars actual milage?..

thanks.

The speedo or the entire cluster?

Assuming you stay within your year bracket (analog/digital), no, there's nothing else to take care of. You can adjust the mileage up, sure. That's easy. Adjusting it down, however, is a bit more involved.

Take it apart and take a look at the cluster. You'll see what has to be done, really.

...no (for the A32). Because in most cases where they'd do it, it'd be illegal.

They're designed specifically to not allow rolling it back, or at the very least show evidence of tampering with the odo.

Why are you going white to black? A downgrade, IMO.

When I replaced mine, I just jotted down the mileage on the old odo and the new one, so you just correct the mileage by adding the (or subtracting) the difference, if that makes any sense. I honestly wouldn't try rolling it forward, just because the whole cluster seems to be set up to fail if you mess with it. I know this because the first cluster I bought had a dead speedo, and upon later inspection I saw where someone had tried to unscrew the odometer.

I didn't see an easy way to adjust the odo up in the bad cluster, since it's all electrical. How would you do that? My thought would be to install the cluster, set the front end on jack stands, then set the cruise at 80 and let it run for a few hours!

Some electrical trickery, simulate a speedo signal into the cluster for as long as it takes to rack up to the correct mileage. It's done with digital clusters rather often.

I just think my blue leds would look better with the black face at night.

do not mess with individual guages. they have fine wires for the springs that pull out. i went threw 3 of them before i figured out i had to replace whole cluster.

i had to replace my analog speedo(not the whole cluster) and the new one had a higher mileage and i was able to take it apart and adjust it to the correct mileage, you just have to be careful taking the needles off and on

all you have to do is replace the guage faces and use your old cluster. just unscrew the guage faces amd take the needle off. Turn the needles counter clockwise to remove needles. some face guages just stick on also. Easy mod.

Ok can someone give me specific directions on how to pull out the cluster? It seems that it would be very difficult. I found a place in Richmond, VA that will repair my odometer for $195.00 with a one year warr.

There are directions all over the place if you search, but it's extremely simple. Remove cluster trim, two screws on the top and it pulls out. Remove cluster, 3 screws and it pulls right out. That's pretty much it...

just take out sccrews around cluster and pull cluster out. i wouldnt pay that much for rebuild when you can go to car-part.com. link to all the salvage yards in nation. you can get whatever cluster for roughly $30.
you can also take individual guages out. but i tried to take needle out of one and messed up 3 of them. so i dont know how dude took needle out. i think its impossible!!! ut just replace entire cluster. alot cheaper and less labor

Did you break your cluster? Taking the needle off is simple. Like I said earlier when you have the cluster out just remove the needles rests, turn the needle counter clockwise and slighty pull off while your turning it. It will take a few turns but the needles WILL come off. Important note, when youn remove the needle rest needles will drop (from a lack of better words) so when they drop mark where the needle points b/c that is where you will have to spin the needle back on counter clockwise to that point. if you dont mark it then you will have messed up readings. Let me know if you have any questions. Use your original cluster and just change the faces, that's what I did when I wanted SE faces on my 96 GXE. PM me and I will give you my phone number so we can talk.

I also agree that white face to black seems backwards. The white is definitely more modern nowadays too IMO. But if you don't adjust the mileage and somewhere down the line the miles are recorded at a shop.... when you're ready to sell, your Carfax may read 'Inconsistent Odometer Reading / Exceeds Mechanical Limits,' which will seem sketchy to potential buyers, even if you tell them why you did it.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with it just to have your cluster look slightly different....at night, no less.

Ive got a 96 SE, and the previous owner switched out the guages to some ricey lookin aftermarket ones, and i want to switch back to OEM white. Ive searched and cannot find how to put the faces on w/o removing the needles. I looked in the stickies and went thru numerous posts. Anyone know how to do this?

You didn't find it because it can't be done. Needles have to come off to remove or install OE faces.
