Tell me my trans is not going bad. . .

Ok. . .95 max, 178k, auto trans

When I begin to drive she's ok until on/about 3000rpm. I hit the gas to accelerate but there's little to no acceleration, then the rpms increase to 6000. I have to keep pumping the gas in order for to drive. The gears for the most part fail to shift. The only time the rpms are low is she's not moving.

And today after about 2 hours of driving, I cant reverse and she drives in neutral. . .i know it sounds crazy but its true. I know I need my o2 sensors changed but i dont think it would be that serious. Can there be any other issue other than my trans?

The first thing I would do Is, check the fluid level of the tranny and check what color the fuids are. I would than drive the car again and see what It does and see If It makes any difference and the sensors. IF the car does the same thing than you have a bad Torque Converter.

Did you check the color of the fluid .(pink being extra clean and dark red or black being burnt is bad.) Which one of these are your fluid colors and have you ever flushed the fluids.

When i checked it, it was light red, almost pink. I have never flushed the fluid.

I've been researching over the net, the sypmtoms about a locked torque converter seem very similar to what i am experiencing. My first gear sometimes start at about 2000rpms.

The best thing you can do from here on out Is rebuild your tranny or get a used one. If you do the Torque Converter you might as well do the seals and all the other things to get It back to shape. It's your call and your money. The fluid is fresh as what your stating in your statement.

You might be able to find a tranny in or near your area.

How much would the cost difference be between replacing the torque converter vs. the transmission as a whole?

If the torque converter failed then it's possible that it has been throwing trash through the trans as well.

I've been through that before - http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...inda-long.html

Well depending on how much it costs you for a trans, it'll cost you the same amount of labor. You have to pull the trans to replace the TC anyway.

Personally I'd swap in a whole new trans. I went through...4 before I swapped out to a 5MT, best decision I've ever made with this car. With proper care and maintenance, they can last forever though.

I'm going onto my 4th trans now (It's in my backyard ready to be put int). I have the same problem but my CEL is on "Improper shifting to 4th gear". If I give it to much gas it slips but will only occur in 4th gear. I had bought a used trans and all was fine but now it's failing.....dam maxima transmissions.

Are these all on the original solenoids, or have you installed the updated kit per the TSB?

i bet that it drives a lot smoother now though huh?? lol....my tranny did the same thing. But my car also drives in park..so what i had to do was turn the car off while still in gear...and put it into park. then take the key out. and i will always park in a hill so i can put the car in neutral with the engine off, let it roll back..start the car and drive. I drove about 250 miles before i got the tranny changed...the car IS driveable..you just can parallel park, and drive it to places where you need to reverse...

PM me details pls!

1st trans trans completely locked up got rebuilt at 60k
2nd/rebuilt original trans went at 120k. Threw "Improper shifting to 4th gear" code.
3rd trans pickup up from a used car parts place for 400 bucks. Worked fine at first but now is failing. Went bad in a month and a half so they gave me a new one because of the warranty.

For the updated solenoids, it's part number 31940-80X25, $89.67 from Courtesy (about $50 cheaper than I paid for it a few years ago). The TSB that specifies this new PN says it only applies to '97s (NTB 98-049d), but there are TSBs for all of the other years explaining how to replace them (NTB 96-110).

IIRC it comes with the entire solenoid pack and a full set of pan bolts. If your current solenoids are faulty, it can fix a bunch of issues. For the cost and piece of mind, I'd probably throw it in any new trans I got.

Thank you! This could very well be my problem. I will check the trans fluid. If it's pink Ill order this up. If it smells burnt I throw in the new trans and see how it drives.

I have an additional question. The trans I have that I will be putting in is from an infiniti j30. Can I use the same "kit"?

What mileage does the tranny in a 95 have this problem at?

Car has 112k on it. What causes these trannys to go like this?

Automatics suck, esp Nissan automatics. Thats what causes them to go like this

I just finished a 5 speed swap in less than a week, but atm the clutch is being a ***** to bleed. Other than that, it was easy. (Thanks to those who answered any questions I had)

Try to take off in low 1. I have seen some maximas and sentras need to be pulled down a little more into drive after some miles. I guess the cable stretches.
