Automatic Transmission Failure

So I'm pulling into my driveway, slight bump at the end so I always take it slow, as I tap the gas to inch forward the transmission makes an incredibly loud pop/explosion sound. The car will not go into R D 1 2 or 3, it makes a subtle ticking noise. The fluid level is fine and I've had the transmission flushed twice since I bought it at 160,000mi. The car now has 214,000mi on it and the tranny is original.

I have an amazing mechanic at Nissan who takes great care of me and is going to look at it Monday when he is back at work but was just curious to know if anyone had a clue as to what it could be by reading my simple story....

Thanks

MROTH

Makes a clicking noise?

Put it in gear and rev it up a little, does the speedo rise? If so, it's most likely an axle.

thanks for the quick response pmohr.

i just went outside and cranked the car up, even when the car is in park it makes a quiet humming noise. (never made it before last night)

I dropped it into D and reved the engine to about 3 grand and the speedo did nothing....

Does the idle change at all when you put in gear?

Check and see if the axle popped out of the transmission or if one of the axles have snapped

Does the humming noise increase as you rev up the engine at all?

Looks like you're in for a tow to a shop, really.

So it just free revs when it's in gear, as if it were in park?
