my e46 retro - big pics
#7
all together i think it was a dirt cheap retro and i'm pretty happy with it. i'll post a pic on the car as soon as i put them back on. don't expect any beam pattern pics though - plenty of those around

damn nice, where'd you get that reflector tape? I could use seom for my Flourescent clear tails, not much illumination in the day without the amber reflector.
Think you could sell me a couple feet?

wow, thx
it's just aluminium heat duct tape - you can get it at home depot, lowe's, ace etc. i got this one at wal mart - about $7 a roll. pm me if you want to pay shipping, and wait for me to mail it to you, though.

Looks like you did a good job, but the projectors look like they're pointed too far out to the sides. At least that's the impression I get from the pictures. Did you aim the projectors before sealing everything back up?

A stock Windows sample picture, too?

to post pics first you have to drop them into photobucket, then copy the direct link and paste it in the image box.

edit: haha, guess i wasn't the only one at that instant to tell him how

the lights aren't aimed yet. i've noticed that the projector aim looks off inside the light but they're staright (used level to get them straight up/down and side/side before sealing).

had to go outside to make sure that they're actually straight
i think it's the weird light angle in the pic that makes them look like pointed to the outsides. soon as i get my connectors and aim i'll post pics of the beam pattern

Looks good, reminds me of a set of Cefiros I did a while back,
Im going to have to agree however about the projectors looking quite off. You will need to aim the housings quite a bit to get them straight and they are going to look quite odd with them pointing so far inwards . Im betting your going to have to reopen them and reaim the actual projectors themselves to get them straight, but good luck.

Yeah, that was my biggest complaint about OEM 4th gen housings - it's hard to find a good level reference, since everything's curved or slanted.
It looks like they've been aimed as if the housings were mounted on the car so the front is flat... but they're angled outwards when installed.

anyways, still waiting for my damn bulb connectors - f'kin usps!
nalc - unfortunately you're totally right
btw my original idea was to reuse my 95 housings with 97 lenses but they have a different shape - the 97's are curved as 95's have a pretty straight line edge in the front.

I too found that out years ago when I tried to put my clear glass lenses on my retroed 97-99 housings. I ended just retroing the 95-96 housings to use the all clear class lenses.

well, i'm not very happy with my right projector because it looks like it is facing straight forward when i was shooting for more of an inward angle. but i won't take them off and bake them open till spring/summer when i get working on my vc gasket, water pump etc.
i have the projectors held in place with 4 threaded rods and should've thought earlier about a better aiming mechanism - right now i have to pull the lights out of the brackets and adjust all 4 nuts on the back - 2 pieces of thin piping over the outer rods spanning from the projector bracket to the back of the headlight. on the inner (closer to the grille) 2 rods 2 springs from the bracket to the back of headlight housing to keep tension - that way only the outer 2 nuts need to be loosened or tightened to aim the projector left to right. idk if anyone has made something like that before but if not i'm feeling pretty smart about my idea
