List of issues...

Ok fellas since we are in the process of getting into a new/bigger house I have decided to keep my maxima for the time being so I dont get into another payment. Here is a list of things that I know of that need done. What do you guys think should be addressed 1st...

1. Both axles are busted
2. Drivers side seal is leaking. This could be due to the axles or could be the freakn bearings (lets hope not).
3. CEL is on. Doesnt effect performance and I still get 350 miles to a tank.
4. Brakes are in ok shape but need to be addressed. I think on of the calipers are sticking sometimes.
5. Front bumper needs replaced and entire car could use a descent paint job.

I have roughly $1000 to play with right now. I am thinking get the axles fixed and check into the seal. The car has 164,000 miles and runs like a champ. No issues at all with driving the car every day. I just have to add a little fluid in each week into the tranny...

Obviously the bumper is the last in line, as far as what needs to be done.

First thing I would do is check for play in the axles where they enter the diff, see if it's the bearings or just a messed up axle seal.

Then, replace the axles, and seal if it's leaking (if it's the diff bearings, start shopping for a new trans, or get ready to rebuild the current one).

Pull the codes, see what's wrong. A problem that illuminates the CEL won't necessarily impact fuel mileage.

If the brakes are 'fine', then get to them when you get the chance/money/time, really.

as stated above ^^ axles first thats safety along with reliablity as for the bumper, well u would rather drive a scratched up car, rather than a car that looks good but doesn't drive at all

Are there any places around us that are reputable enough to rebuild the tranny if this is the case?

Also where is a good place to get axles from. Should I just get OEM ones or is the aftermarket ones ok. I dont drive this car hard so I dont need top of the line ones.

In WV, no idea.

If I were going to have someone rebuild my trans in MD, it would be one person...Frank at Hill's Garage, near Baltimore.

OEM is going to cost you a grand for the pair.

Just grab your typical AutoZone or other parts store axles, I've always had good luck with A1 Cardone. They'll do just fine.

I am only an hour from Baltimore so I may have to look him up. Do you have any contact info?

+1 i just replaced both my front axles about 6 months with autozone axles and with core it was about $85 an axle...and they are fairly easy to do yourself

sweet. Thanks man. I am going to give him a call tomorrow. Does he do tranny rebuilds also. I am probably going to have him look at the hole car since I really havent had it to a mechanic since I have owned it.

I believe he does, I don't see why he wouldn't. 5Mts, anyway.

Just talked to him on the phone. He is going to do both my axles and both axle seals for a few hundred cheaper than a few places around here. We have labor rates of around $60 an hour but apparently they mechanics here take a little while longer to do certain jobs.
