i just took apart my back seat due to constant annoying rattle in the rear deck in normal driving conditions. It turns out the middle seat belt mechanism is the source of the rattle.



As you can see i attempted a temporary metal-to-metal contact fix with duct tape. Had several layers around the speaker openings and the middle seat belt opening, hell, even in-between the seat belt mechanism itself. Didnt help much. I think its the weight of the unit itself that makes the whole center of the rear deck heavier and easier to wobble.

I tested the rear deck with everything removed; Speakers and seat belt mechanism. I then banged it with my fist to mimic the bounce of the rear end when driving over uneven roads. No noise. I installed one of the speakers, repeated the process, No noticeable noise. 2nd speakers, etc..No Noise. I installed the middle seat belt housing...pounded on rear deck and voila! Noise Appears. So...this is where i duct taped the hell out of everything that touched metal but no luck.


Any suggestions?


Edit: to the right, above the middle-seat belt, you can see a X shape covered in duct tape. Thats covering up a lot of holes and slots cut out into the rear deck. I dont know their purpose but it seems to make that area weaker. You can see the uncovered version by looking at the first picture, its opposite side isnt covered with tape, but you can see the slots im talking about.

 

I would honestly not think that duct tape is an effective sound deadener. Personally... I would stick some hushmat, cascade, dynamat or whatever on the whole rear deck.

I dont have a rattling in the rear. I do have a bad rattle from the plastic that covers my gauges. If I am on a back road it is terrible. I slightly lay my hand across it and it goes away. Any ideas on fixing that?

 

The bezel or the clear plastic?

 

if it the bezel ur talking about i would put some 3m doubled sided tape, if not than i would buy another one

 

My personal recommendation to him over AIM was to remove the '99 style center belt and hardware and install a '95-'98 style. This assumes the mounting points for the older style belt are still on the chassis, but shady seems to think they're there (I haven't seen a picture and I personally own a '98).

Seeing as I don't know what the rear deck looks like on a '99, I'm just making a guess here, but, the method I suggested may then leave a hole in your rear deck where there is no longer a belt setup.

 

Yep, I'm going to drive around with all that junk tape i've put on there and see if its quieter than before. If that fails, im planning on removing it entirely when i do my sound deadening install.

Kinda sucks, that middle seat belt was a nice feature :P

 

might have to take a look back there.

 

My rattles gone. Only thing i hear now is my change in the ash tray.

I added some hard cardboard around the rear deck and taped it all down and through the slots to stiffen it up. Seems to have done the job....temporarily.

 

The plastic is clipped into the gauge housing. If you pull the trim around the cluster you can get at the clear plastic thing. From there you can take it out or whatever it takes to get it quiet.

Or wedge something between the clear plastic and the cluster trim...

Cardboard did the trick for me...no more noise!

 

I think you should bang the cr*p out of it with a hammer.

Nothing like a little percussive maintenance.
