Speedometer Problem on 95 GLE

Hi,

I just realized that my speedometer on my 95 Maxima GLE is off by 10-15 miles.
I just bought this car like 5 days ago, and when I was driving on my regular driving speed on freeway (around 75mph), It felt alot faster than It should. I was thiking that this might be normal for maxima, because some cars are actually feels faster than others on the same speed.
I did speedchecked on freeway by counting how many miles I drove compared with how many miles changes in my car. But It was normal and the miles increases is accurate.

But just now, I was driving with my friends in other car, when we were driving on freeway, I was curious and I pulled my car next to his car, and I called him on cell phone, asking how fast was he driving? he said he was going 65, but its only showing 55 on my speedometer.

FYI, my car is all stock, with stock wheels and my friend was driving his 2001 BMW M5 (stock wheels).

Anybody know what's wrong??? is there an issue with speed sensor?? on Maxima??

I was planning to get the SE white cluster, but I don't know if this would help.

If you just recently bought your Max, do a carfax report. Maybe someone switched the cluster to commit odometer fraud and left a wire loose or did something to it????

I did carfax report, its all clean, the first owner used it until 65K miles, and the second owner used it until 124K, and I'm currently the third owner.
I'm just wondering if anyone ever experience the same thing... and know what's wrong with it......

Could be a bad speed sensor. It can be tested by removing the sensor from the transaxle housing. Connect a voltmeter to the terminals on the sensor. Spin the gear on the sensor quickly by hand while noting the voltage. The sensor should produce approx. 0.5volts(AC). If it doesn't it's faulty.

Did you possibly check if the tire sizes are correct? Perhaps they have been replaced before the car was sold to you and maybe the improper dimension tires have been used. Incorrect dimensions sometimes throw off your speedo reading.

Get a Haynes or Chilton's manual, the directions are in both of those. BTW, getting a new cluster will not make any difference, he sensor isn't anywhere near the dash. BTW, you only need to change the face of the gauges, but the whole cluster.

Jeez! Sorry you guys! I'm such a dumbass! I didn't read the post fully (in my eagerness to help). I reread the post and see you're running stock tires. Sorry, my bad.

No I do not have a more detailed set of instructions. The advice I gave you was from the Chilton manual. I do know the sensor is on the transaxle housing. I believe it is attached to a driven gear. Maybe someone else can elaborate as to the exact position of it. If it is a bad sensor the new cluster will still be off so I would eliminate other possibilites before purchasing a cluster, unless of course you have reason to suspect the cluster.

You still have too many variables; "butt dyno" is very unreliable and you don't know the accuracy of the car you checked your speed against.

1. Double-check your tire size, stock is 205-65R15. Any deviation from that will affect your speedometer reading.

2. Use a stop watch and a freeway with mile markers and record exactly how long it takes you to travel 10 miles at exactly 60 m.p.h. 60 m.p.h. = 1 m.p.m., so it sould take exactly 10 minutes. You can calculate the error from there.
