5 speed swap -> Pilot bearing?

I can't see how the pilot bearing is required in this setup, the input shaft of the transmission comes nowhere near the crankshaft. Another issue is, it appears theres another part there which would need to be removed to install the pilot bearing as the hole is SLIGHTLY to small?? I did a search, and found many people have done 5 speed swaps successfully w/o the pilot bearing, and others saying its not needed with this transmission. Can anyone confirm this?

I also haven't found anything in my FSM about pilot bearings...

hehe, Same dilemma I am having. I don't know if I should just swap the tranni out or having someone rebuild it because my input shaft is going.

just did the swap, you have to remove the bushing that is in there now, i used a bearing puller to get it out, and the installed the pilot bushing, some have done it without this but to line the clutch i found it easier to change it out.

You didn't have to do any of that. The 5 speed never touches the pilot bushing. The pilot bushing exists for no reason at all.
