FINALLY....time to KILL the SQUEAK

This is a job thats been long overdue. Weathers warming up and my money is right. I've done my reading and the likely culprits appear to be between my control arm and/or Strut mount (driverside front).

Looking for tips or "tell tale" signs on how to determin which between the two are the culprits if not both. I've been over the car a few times trying 2 zero in on the source but its still hard to pinpoint. When I'm under the car it sounds like its above me, when I'm above the car it sounds like it's below. Very frustrating.

Looking for fellow 4th Gen comments.

Hopefully helpful details:

-KYB/AGX struts that are a little over a year old. Sqeak was present before and after my factory struts were replaced.

-I noticed the threaded end of the strut thats visible from the mounts has way more play than my passenger side strut, but the sound doesn't appear to be coming from that point.

-Sound is your classic "squeaky mice" sound that is heard hiting bumps or just cruising at park lot speads. AARRRGGGH is it ANNOYING.

Open your hood and bounce the car up and down on the drivers side near the strut mount to see if it squeks, I just bought some KYB struts new springs and strut mounts for the same problem after afew long bumpy NE winters, pothole cental.

Hope this helps

Normally, link kits are squeaking firt.

Jack the car, use a vicegrip and try to move the link kit. You'll see if its metal on metal (no more grease).

I got this problem twice, because I changed 1 link, do the job for both...

Btw, its very hard to tell witch side its come from, it looks like the sound come from everywhere.

+1 on the sway bar links, cheap and easy fix. Make sure it's not the link before you start tearing into the tougher and more expensive parts of the suspension. If the links are original it does not hurt to change them anyway.

I could feel vibration in the link and control arm if someone pushed down on the car causing the squeak, that's how I found it.

Mine sqeeked constantly when I would go over a small bump or on the highway. It was rather annoying!!! So one day I found out what it might be and it actually turned out to be the oem boot thingy which got stuck between the bump stop and shaft. Much better after that, but still did it once in a while so I replaced the insulator assy. Quiet now.

Ok...first order of business will be to check the sway bar links....but question?

Wouldn't I have to have a sway bar to have "links" or are these "links" just the points where one would attach a sway bar? You know, that whole area where the strut mounts are located.

You have a sway bar that's what the links are attached to. Do a search you can find instructions with pics.

I looked it up and ah **** bro, your right. All these years of ownership and up until now I ALWAYS thought after market "STRUT BARs" were sway bars. Thanks Man.

Now that were on the same page, this part of the suspension has always been a source of interest, just never knew it was called a sway bar. Lol. I'm hitting this section of the car first. I think I might spray the links down with some silicon and see if the sound goes away. If it does, thats at least one of the sources.

I'm telling you, U guys just don't understand how personal this particular job has become to me. I've dealt with the "Squeak, squeak, squeak!!" for close to 3 years now. At first, it didn't bother me. I always had the radio on. Now my factory speakers are on there way out, so I don't listen 2 the the radio as often. That happened about a year ago. I've given the suspension "half serious" once over's probably a dozen times now, but never developed the drive to really dig in and find the issue. Putting the struts on was a b!tch and the thought of having to muck around with them was very unattractive, so I dealt with it....and slowly but surely the "Squeak, squeak, squeak!!" has driven me nuts!!

Tuesday of THIS week while cruising to a stop at a light with my windows down, without warning I just bust out loud and audible "What da f*k IS that!!!?" Lol....my breaking point. Now its time to KILL the Squeak.

Thanks Fellas. I know where to start now. I'll report back when its all taken car of.

You can try but spraying silicone on it may not help even if the link is the source of your noise. Good Luck!

Damn, i bought my max about 8 weeks ago, i started to get the squeaking about 4 weeks ago, started getting out of control this past week. I was planning on a complete replacement of the suspension, finally got my money together and started purchasing stuff. Can't wait for the squeaking to stop.

I really can't believe you dealt with that noise for 3 years!
Keep us updated with what happened!

double check your shock mounts. theres a big nut that holds the shock to the seprate mount which is the 3 bolts you see coming through the top of the wheel well under your hood.

i probly lost you, but the only thing holding everything i explained to you is a rubber mount and these wear out after many miles. theres also a strut bearing up top. all parts can be seen here

you can check if its worn by tightening it and if it just spins and doesnt get tighter ur screwed

You are the man!! I too was about to go nuts due to a squeak, found this thread, and thought this was the easiest place to start. Easiest fix so far, thanks.
