A/C compressor

What's up ya'll,
I took my 97 max into my mechanic and he says I need a new A/C compressor. My A/C works fine right now, but since summer is coming should I go ahead and get it taken care, or will it affect my car in other ways if I don't get it down within the next two months? Does it affect gas mileage?? It also making a humming sound too. Please let me know what you guys think.

Peace,

Rasheed

Just a quick word -- get a second opinion; might be bearing going bad, but you should check around, unless you REALLY trust the guy. Maybe there's someone in the org near you. Where are you ??

I don't think I've ever recommended to anyone that they replace a component in a system that is currently operating properly. Not understanding here, is there an issue, or is this simply preventative maintenance?

A good reminder to everyone to run their AC in the winter for a few minutes occasionally. I think the biggest contributor to AC failure is having it sit all winter and not get used. Had an AC clutch go out on a Taurus because of that...

^^^ That's what's wrong with it. Most likely a bearing.
Live with the humm till if fails altogether or just replace the thing now.
My buddy's I30's compressor has been singing for a few years now.
Still works fine, but she's noisey as all he11.
