The VQ doesn't have lifters.

What makes you think that's what the noise is? Just a loud clicking? A relatively loud clicking sound is normal, the injectors can be quite loud.

Sound clip, video, anything? Tried to find exactly where the noise is coming from at all?

VQ30 injectors are probably one of the noisest injectors ive seen. They are loud, but i also had a ticking.

Are you sure the VQ30 doesnt have lifters? According to the FSM, it does, and they do have shims. EM48 on the FSM shows how to adjust valve clearence. I either had a bad lifter, or a clearence issue. Never got around to doing it, as i blew the motor 3 days after i ordered all the parts to do that and re-seal my timing cover..go figure.

Sound clip would be best, some peoples definition of ticking, would be ones definition of rattling.

The VQ doesn't have lifters in the technical or traditional sense. The shim buckets are what most everyone calls 'lifters'.

Ill try to get a audio clip but ill try to explain it, its almost like you might be low on oil and you dont hear it when you first start it but when its ran for a minute or so you here like the lifters need adjusted but at the same time it could be injectors, but the sound never goes away it will just get a little louder as you get on the gas more, if you could imagine a little peice on tin tapping against the block and the more you get on the gas the more it taps.

Yeah i was just thinking about it, i think lifter is one of those loosely thrown around terms. The shim bucket, i guess is what the FSM refers to as the lifter.

Hey i got a question. Somewhere between 00-03 they switched over from the shim + bucket to the newer style, the shim is built into the bucket. I have torn apart a few R50 pathfinders some used shims, some used the newer style with the shim as part of the bucket? I cant figure out what year it was, i have access to a few motors, i plan on stealing the shims out of them but i want to make sure i dont do what i did last time

All RWD VQs I've torn down have one piece buckets (Z33/V35, mostly). Not sure when they changed over though, that's a nismology question.

Thats the thing i was curious apart. The only RWD VQs ive torn down would be the R50/Z33. I was on fast and it shows service files for the 01+ R50 on the once piece bucket/shim, but on the 00 it shows shims so maybe it was an early 3.5 thing. Maybe when they went to e-gas is when the switch happened. I can verify that the Z50's from 03 on use the one piece along with Z33's use the one piece too!

My '98 sounds the same way and seems to be getting louder. The noise first started at about 50K miles and now at 85K it really sounds like a POS. I am open to suggestions.

Well if you really want to do something about it, you could always check valve clearances and see if it needs some work. Other than that, you're not going to incur any major damage by just letting it be.

That's if you're sure it's 'lifter' noise.

I am willing to check valve clearance... is there a guide online or do I need to spring for a manual?

Just download the FSM, all procedures are in there.

I also have a "sewing machine" click, really only around 2k-2.5k rpm. My timing chain tensioners have been replaced, as well as the guides. The place i think i found the noise in was the injectors, i should just leave it alone?
