Need some clutch help please...

Alright so Im in the middle of replacing my clutch and yes i have searched and all that fun stuff but I was wondering if it was absolutly neccissary to remove the y-pipe. Oh and one more thing my radiator support is rusting pretty bad is it safe to unbolt the crossmember and put it back in with no problem or am I going to have to weld in a support bracket or something?

I will take a pic on Tuesday to clarify on this whole thing.

Thanks in advance.

You do not have to remove the y-pipe to take the tranny out - i have taken mine out about 4 times now, so I should know

We'll need to see a pic of how bad the rust is to tell if its safe or not. I am willing to bet most people's core-supports are rusting as well, it all just depends on how bad it is...

Why would you remove the crossmember to do the clutch anyway?

And as has been said, no need for the Y to come off. Just makes it easier to get the passenger side axle carrier bolts.

I meant the engine support beam thing that bolts up to the radiator support and has the tranny mounts on it. I dont rememeber the proper name for it.

Yeah axles are out Im just waiting for my part to come in. Ill take a pic of the radiator support tomorrow.

Yes, that's the crossmember. Why would you remove that to do a clutch job?

No need to remove the crossmember, no need to remove the two motor mounts.

Just the trans mount, axles, wiring, slave cylinder. Then you drop the trans.

save the money and get some good gear oil for your tranny. if you need to, you could always just use your floor jack...

What do you need a jack for anyway - the tranny weighs like 50 lbs???

What about the wheels.

You are really gifted Pmohr if you can do it without taking the wheels off.

Actually I had to, once.

Ended up taking the hub, wheel, and axle off as one big assembly. I was due for bleeding the brakes anyway, heh.

Long story short, I forgot the key for my locking lugnuts and really didn't want to drive the 50 miles roundtrip to get it. Sometimes you do stuff just to see if you can

dude what the hell you should of said something in advance ive dropped my 5spd so many times its getting old(I will have to do it very shortly LOL)

i know im late but yeah dont drop your cross member. you will just have to use a 12 or 14mm open end wrench to get that bolt right next to the cross member(on the tranny) i cant really remember. and you dont really need a tranny jack yeah its easier but just getting it from the rental will probley weigh more than that tranny. what i did was just put a 3\4inch peice of plywood on a regular floor jack and balanced it on that. yeah its ghetto but it worked.

just let me know if you want a hand i work in blaine so if you need a hand just lmk

tranny Removal

I'll probably get some "trash" for this---but when I took out my tranny, instead of trans jack, I cut 2-2 X4's, nailed them together and placed it between the fendors. Then I wrapped my nylon holddown strap around the trans and the 2X4's, and used it to lower--and later raise the trans into place by cranking on the tightening mechanism on the holdown strap. I thought it was pretty innovative.

damn when i first got the car and upgraded the clutch i honestly removed the crossmember. a little while after i learned that i didnt have to. IIRC it was a bolt on the linkage and i think an open end was slipping off so i just dropped the xmember. takes 5 min. with a 17mm and a few extentions through the driver side wheel well...

Well everything went great with the install and all except the throwout bearing I got with the clutch kit didnt come with any clips!!!!!!!! I tried to take the clips off the old one but when I pried a little they just snapped! So now I have to wait till tomorrow to go to the dealership to get a pair of clips. I tried Courtesy but it says it takes 2-4 buisness days just for them to take it out of their warehouse. So now Im stuck driving a Durango that gets a whopping 8mpg for another week. YAY!! Sorry just had to let off some steam.

No need for a jack, it can easily be done by two people. Doable by one, but it's a bit ungainly.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you man. I will hopefully be putting my 3.5 in this week so hopefully the 00vi will be out. but i know i will have to use the 5th gen tb and the rear coil packs off the 00vi for the swap so ill probley sell it cheaper than expected. i will be able to use the 4th gen tb but then we will have to figure out(make a block off plate for the ivac) and find a de-k laying around so we can get te coil packs off of it

Guys just let him get a jack. it is 10x easier that way, plus look at it this way. When you pop out that sucker, you can just leave it on the jack and inspect other things that could be wrong with the car that you don't know of or if you need better acess to it. For example. When I get my clutch down with Kevin, I will take a look at the EGR tube since I got the trans down.

ive got a question, im replacing my clutch, and i want a 5th gen clutch kit in my 4th gen. Is it okay to use a 5th gen clutch kit from autozone, or advance auto parts, or should it come from the dealership? Does it make any difference?

First, it's an auto parts store clutch. That should say enough.

Personally, for what, $200? I would just get the OEM 5th gen setup.

That's all you'd need, disc, pressure plate, and TOB.

Where are you getting it all from?

Dave B will be a lot cheaper than your local dealership, more than likely. Also, he's one of the few parts guys that will know what you're talking about, and not get confused with part numbers.

Order from Dave B, you'll be fine. Shipping only took a few days to me in MD, he's based out of TX.

Before you ask how to contact him, search. IIRC his number is even in the stickies.
