computer codes - general question

check engine light reset - just ridding the light or is the problem still prevelant?
I was wondering, after viewing a check engine light and then determining the codes, if the computer check engine light does not turn back on (after putting the screw back in the normal position), does that mean the codes were a fluke? Or, alternatively, does that mean you simply reset the engine light and the problems are still prevelent?
I did this procedure to a 1995 SE that my sister drives and determined she had a faulty knock sensor and engine coolant temp sensor. The car ran fine, never knocked, and never runs hot. After moving the screw back to the normal position, the check engine light is off and has been ever since. Did I reset the computer? Did I reset the light? Finally, if the problem is still there, wouldn't he light come on again in subsequent days?
Thanks for any input.
