Hi people
I bought a Nissan Maxima 97 GXE...The speedmeter(with the 4 digit mileage) sometimes doesn't function,and suddenly when running at 40-50MPH it kicks off and works.(til the next turning the car off)I think the car was off-work for 4 or 5 days before I took it from the seller..maybe the cause? or the mechanic who washed the engine for me ??
It's now sometimes on...sometimes off...Maybe needs some lubrication (maybe stalled) !!!!
Any infos appreciated

Updated ...I noticed today the fellowing :
After swiching on the engine,ran few feets (as usual,SPEEDO , trip and ODOmeter all off) , I swiched the cruise control on to try , suddenly after that , the SPEEDO and all worked very fine,til I returned home,even after I swiched the cruise control in the middle of way home (by the way it works fine as I noticed)........I heard if cruise control works -----> VSS is normal !!!
What do you say about that ?

 

It could possibly be your VSS (Vehicle speed Sensor) gone bad.

 

Thanks for the replay.......Is the VSS under the hood or in the area inside the gauges ? how can I replace it and how much do you estimate its price ?

it's on top of the transmission located near the fire wall. Not sure what would be the cost to repair. A friend had a similar problem, and replacing the VSS solved it.

 

i had the same problem, try tapping on the speedo, if that fixes it you may have a loose wire in the gauge cluster or you may have to replace the speedo head

 

First, are you getting any codes? No VSS code?

Second, pull the cluster and tighten up the screws on the back.

After that, check the wiring to the VSS.

The guy I bought my maxima off of replaced the trans in it from some random shop and the ****ed up the harness that goes from the main harness to the sensor, and he couldnt find the speed sensor so he had a CEL that he couldnt get rid of and he sold it to me for $1000 and that was the only thing wrong with it besides a slight oil leak. I fixed the sensor within 3 minutes. Needless to say, he was kinda mad about selling his car that he could got for about $3k around here..

Anyway Speed sensor cost me $30 brand new and all i really needed was the harness spliced it together and all fixed

A shop may charge you $100 at the most im guessing.

 

Actually I don't have any engine light or any other warning lights....Only thing is some 4 to 5 beeps (short ones) ..I don't know that's normal or not !!...Sometimes right from the start the speed meter doesn't work and suddenly works!!! and then suddenly stops working !!! NO any other abnormalities...NO ENGINE LIGHT

 

hate to say, but its ur cluster. i had to re place mine wen the tach would only go to 2500rpm even wen i revved. (i learned how to shift thru engine sound =]). i replaced it and alls good. cost me about 100 bucks. install is basically plug and play. but if you dont have and idiot lights on then i dnt think its your VSS

 

OK thanks maxispeed........Can I get a cluster in Lexington Kentucky ? where to buy it ? and my mileage is 167K miles....How can I make the new one reads 167k mileage ? should I get one with close mileage to 167k ??

 

Unfortunatly I think they dont make IC's for older maximas. Im not sure though. If they do you give the dealership the exact mileage for the new one. You are most likely going to have to go to a junkyard and find one with the miles close to yours. Good luck.

 

Now CEL is ON and stil speedometer working on the OFF !!!!!!!!

As mentioned above, it's your cluster.

Similiar thing happened to me. I got a code indicating the VSS had gone bad. I replaced the VSS, reset the ecu, but it came back. Replaced the cluster and all was well.

...until now (two years later). Now the tach sticks at random times for random intervals; but only when it's raining.
