ecu differences and compatibilities

have a 97 gxe, auto, no abs, no lsd and need another ecu.
does it have to be from a 97 or will a 95,96,98 work?
i have a feeling 99 won't work but wanna make sure about the others as well.

IIRC you cannot use an ECU from a '95-'96. Not sure about the other years.

Everything but a '99 should work. There are several people running 95/96 modified ECUs in their later model year cars, and several running later year ECUs in their earlier cars.

Note that if you use a different model year or emissions spec ECU, you most likely will get a CEL for something missing.

what do you have to modify for the earlier year ecms? can you just not "modify" and will it be ok, besides throwing off a CEL?

If your not worried about throwing off a CEL, then theres no need to modify.

Really depends on what you define 'working' as, I guess.

oh one more thing, would power driver's seat matter or would that just throw another CEL again? car-parts.com listed that as one of the distinguishing factors

* Elec Cont Unit (ECU), (under center of dash), thru 10/96, GXE, AT, w/power driver's seat
* Elec Cont Unit (ECU), (under center of dash), thru 10/96, GXE, AT, w/o power driver's seat

It wouldn't throw a CEL, not sure why they list that. Either will work just fine.

Correct. Anything under the '99 model year, you just plug it in and you're good.

I suggest getting a 5-speed ecu over a auto if possible to aviod high idle issues

but it's a small issue if you have no other option
