Bose Unit Retrofit?

Hey Guys,

Wondering what is the newest OE Bose unit i can install directly to the car. I dont want to change anything in the dash or speakers but would like to update the head unit. Also would like to add a subwoofer.

Idea was to get something like a 5th gen headunit. Can a 6th gen work as well. Sorry Not too shabby about these things.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Are there any specific features you're looking for?

I would just throw in a Z33 or Pathfinder 6 disc and call it a day.

You cannot retrofit a 5th or 6th gen radio into a 4th gen. The very shape of either radio is completely different...not to mention that the wiring is also different.

The most you could do it install a bose head unit from a 99 max. I wouldn't recommend that though since it won't be much of an upgrade...the 95-98 head units sit nice and flush with the dash....not like the 99.

Pathfinder radio is a possibility too, as mentioned above.

nothing specific. My display doesn't work and don't want to go through all the hassle to get it back working. Id rather get something a little updated without changing any speakers. They sound great with the exception of not having a sub.

6 disc sounds good. just looking for plug and play though.

That's the great thing, they are plug and play. The Z33 unit requires some minor dremel work on the trim, IIRC the Pathfinder doesn't.

Check it out, just bought this: http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...head-unit.html

Can't wait to get it installed! What I'm REALLY looking forward to is the RDS, not to mention it looks way better than my current BOSE head unit AND it has a 6-CD changer. Plug and play is a nice touch, too!

Nope, it will not work on non-BOSE. I'm not sure what the power output is - I just know it's supposedly plug and play with existing BOSE harnesses.

It looks the same as the one I just bought. It is plug and play. It sticks out just a little farther than my 98 Bose which was flush. Has more power and the RDS is awesome. Install is not too bad but don't get in a hurry. Definitely a good upgrade. Looks stock.

btw its a direct plug-n-play with your OE setup. the ONLY modification neccesary is to open up the holes in the brackets about a quarter inch

I really need to get an MP3 compatible Bose unit...the Pathfinder would be a nice one, given the curve in the Z33 headunit. Always end up having to burn new CDs, get tired of the 6 I have.

Though I think a lot of the problem with the one I put in is I bolted it up just like the factory radio, didn't even bother trying to set it back any. Minor details and all.

How about an aftermarket double din unit (non dvd) with mp3, USB, and Ipod capability? You could use a bose harness which will allow you to keep the rest of the system stock.

In that way, you could have access to infinite amounts of music without having to burn discs all the time.

Man after seeing the pix that ROCKART posted, I just might have to upgrade to the Pathfinder 6 disc.

I pulled out the in-trunk changer and added a Monster Cable iCruze. It plugs in the same connector and use CD buttons on the HU to change folders and songs. The iPod connector was placed in the arm rest. The display unit is optional.

Of course, that requires an iPod and a trunk mounted cd changer, where as the Z33 unit is all in-dash.

Heh I know I'll end up buying something eventually, but probably not for a long time. I'm lazy like that.

That iCruze is installed off the HU, in place of the changer setup. I ended up selling the changer kit. Yes, you will need an ipod.

I have this iCruze in two cars, the i30 and a VW GTI.

That thing got terrible reviews - I would just go for the '04 Pathfinder head unit and call it a day. Plus, it looks stock.

Yeah, not the neatest thing in the world. You have to organize songs in folders then switch folders with the change CD button. But once you get use to using it, it is fairly well integrated. No hardware failures so far. I picked up these boxes for very little money so not a bad solution over all.
