Belt dressing helps squeaking belts?

I believe I have a drive belt that squeaks when it's raining outside, a bit cold or high humidity after rain. When it is warm and sunny the belt does not squeak.

The belt is old and is probably the reason the noise is there. There are no obvious cracks in the belt so for now, I will leave it alone. Does belt dressing help eliminate these squeaks?

Is it possible the bearing/tensioner is squeaking and not the belt?

Have you tried just tightening it?

Belt dressing is just a temporary fix. All it does is makes them sticky so they dont slip and eventually wear off and back to the squealing.

i used belt dressing one time and it helped for a little bit and then started squeaking again so i put more and more on and it got to the point where it wouldnt stop and then i put a new belt on and the old belt dressing messed up the new belt and made that one end up slipping after a while too. it took about 2 hours of cleaning the pulleys and 2 belts to finally make it stop. its always best to fix the problem instead of just put a band aid on it IMO

note: it was a chevy blazer.

I've had to tighten mine a few times. Michigan weather can really affect things like this, lol.

Try tightening it, if it keeps coming back...just consider replacing it, since you said it's old. It's not that pricey.

i was missing my splash guard on the passenger side and water/salt/snow/who knows what (because of winter) pounded my belts. not surprisingly they just started squeaking, so i just put in new ones and put in the splash guard. IMO, just replace them.

I'm missing my splash guard as well. I thought I would have to replace the belts, but just tightened the pulley and no more squeal. The car would also squeal on start up.

WD40 will work for a bit but doesnt last. Check tightness or just get a gatorback belt.

The belts have 70k miles on them and are glazed. Most likely they are the culprit. How often do you guys replace your drive belts?

My car has 134k miles on it, do I need to do the tensioner along with the belts or should I not bother with it if it isn't giving me trouble?

Thanks

I had the same issue after a lazy mechanic didnt tighten the belts properly after installing my new belts. They were quiet for the first few weeks then were loud as hell on start up. The belt dressing worked for a bit, but you eventually need to have them tightened. If they are old, or its been like that for too long, just replace it.
