emergency brake button driving me nuts

Well, let my roommate drive my car (my mistake) and he returned it in a weird condition - the ebrake button is weird. Fast forward to today and I'm now installing a new radio I have the everything open and thinking perhaps there's a solution to this nagging problem.

Basically the button no longer extends. The emergency brake works fine but the button looks 'short'. It use to extend out about half an inch and now it's short - this just annoys me to no end.

I've been under the car, no sign of a problem with the cable. I've tighten the 10mm tensioner. What should I do next? Anyone have this happen to them? I haven't a clue what he did. Thanks in advance.

that's what i thought and pushed HARD - but no real movement. you wouldn't know just how much pressure it can take, i don't want to crack it.

the cable has nothing to do with the button.. in fact u should not touch that cable...

does the button press in real far into the handle or not? if it does that means that the handle needs to be slid back...

if it doesnt then the spring inside is fawked up..

The button doesn't press in real far - how hard to replace the spring? Thanks.
