I recently purchased a 97 GLE from a dealership that was still under factory warranty. The extended warranty for 4 more years up to (84K) was $1400. I would appreciate any recommendations on if it is worth it.

Thanks,
-Greg

Absolutely not worth it

You should have drive train coverage to 72k miles with a Nissan certified pre owned... There is nothing that can happen to your car in that 12k miles that can't be prevented with regular oil changes. Even a worst case scenario is a lifter goes, and that does not justify the $1400. Just my opinion, but backed by a 93SE with 101k, and a 97SE with 71k. The 93 we replaced a lifter, that's all. Keep the $1400, get a Y pipe and an intake, and pocket the other $900.

Each owner makes his own decision on this question. It's a matter of personal philosophy. My own practice is to NEVER buy an extended warranty on any product. If it has a repuation for durability, I figure I won't need the warranty. If it lacks a good reputation, I shouldn't be buying the darn thing.

An extended warranty is an insurance policy. If you have to make a claim you may find yourself battling the warranty company about what is covered and what is not, and whether driver abuse was or was not the cause of the problem.

same situation with a 2017 maxima sl, 8k on it and has power drive train warranty for 4 years or 100k? Extended warranty would be another 1400 for same 4 years but covers far more, is it worth it?

This thread is 20 years old. As far as your 2017 Maxima, get every available extended warranty for that thing.
