Why are 95's faster than 96/97's?

I've read a few posts that said 95's were faster than 96's and 97's. I have a 95 GXE right now but I'm looking to purchase a 97 SE. Will I be dissapointed in the performance of the 97 compared to my 95? If so, why are 95's faster and what can I do to make a daily driver 97 as fast as my 95?
Thanks for any responses.

Yes - 95's are ever so slightly faster.
Stricter emissions are the culprit. The weight is not substantial enough to create a major difference.
You do plan on upgrading the exhaust system any right? That should solve the problem.
Even if not - you won't be dissapointed with either a 95 or a 97. Theses are quick cars -period.

Both Chilton and Haynes say that '95 Maximas have OBD-2 compliant engines.

Could it also be the wheel size?
The 97-99 come with 16in rims, which may weigh a little more than the 15's on the 95-96.
Just a thought, course I shouldnt talk since I dont own a Maxima...yet...

i dont think the 97-99s are safer than the 95s, cuz cars dont crash..people crash. btw..i raced a 97-99 the other day too..stick shift with modds..i beat him by a car length. we got the next light, and he asked me what i got..i said..nothin' all stock
