I test drove a 97 max i might be interested in, and that was the first 5spd max i drove, and there was this constant wine comming from the engine i believe in first gear, low rpms, not jsut driving on it, but even accelarting through first gear, you can hear the noise all the time from the start. The guy said it happens in a lot of stick max's that year. Is he right, or is something messed up?

Does it do it only when the car is moving? I'd check the drive axles for play near the transmission as well as leakage. It seems that 5 speed maxima's have a bad problem with the differential carrier bearings going bad.

 

Only when car is moving, basically instantly when it starts mvoing in first through the engine, not rolling down a hill, but actually in first gear, also is that an expsivie/bad problem?

 

That's definitely not normal. My car doesn't do that.
