Overheating sort of...

I have a 96 Maxima. It has a weird problem. It acts and looks like it is over heating, but the temp gauge is in the middle, and their is plenty of coolant in the radiator. I just replaced the radiator because of a crack. I thought this was the problem, but it is still acting like it is overheating, but everything seems normal. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

It wants to stall, and seems to get really hot (engine compartment). I think I see some steam, but never when I am out of the car to see where it is coming from. I know it is not much of a description, but it is what I have to go by.
