What is "VIN Code: C" referring to?

What is "VIN Code: C" referring to?
I'm looking for a rear O2 sensor for my 1996 Maxima, and some of the ones I found say that they're for Maximas with vin code "C". What exactly is the C referring to?

Just refers to the engine type, feel free to disregard.

The system is set up for all makes and models, which can change drastically. It just doesn't apply to the A32.
