1999 Maxima I'm thinking about buying but it has no title...

Well here is the maxima I'm thinking about buying...Its from this guy who says he picked it up from a friend from an impound lot and it has no title, it just seems kind of shady to me.

Anyway, I ran the VIN on a vin check for stolen vehicle database and there is nothing there. I want to run a CARFAX but I dont have a user ID(PM me please to talk someone...).

Car runs and drives, 170K auto, silver and black leather GLE, exterior kinda rough but interior is very nice.

He said he wants $550 but claims keys he made cost $150 and he acting like he wont give me the keys for $550? Anyway...I don't realy know what to do about this but I would buy it if I could get a title and drive it but he is acting like it costs a lot of money(I think you cant get impound cars retitled, but I dont know for sure.)

Please, care free to add to my dilemma:

No title=no deal, IMO.

Pay the $20 and run the carfax if you're REAAAAALLY interested. Don't cheap out/be lazy on the background research. Something smells fishy about the whole thing.

It really does...he claims he got it from a friend in the "impound lot" that can get him cars for cheap.

I'm calling the DMV tomorrow and asking them what the deal is with the "title" situation...

Buy it, then part it out. If you buy it for $550 you will make an amazing profit parting it out, especially because its got black leather interior, alot of people swap out their tan interior for black leather. Not to mention the engine, tranny, and stuff.

That does not sound legit.

If there is no title I would just walk away, there will be more part cars out there.

if you want it for parts - get it.
if you want to work on the title - run a carfax, find the last titled owner and ask them to file for a lost title and sign it over to you - might not be as easy as it sounds.

a year ago i found an abandoned mitsubishi gt3000 and wanted to get it.carfax said the last registration was in FL (car found in MT) and expired 4 years before - i couldn't get in touch with the last owner...so i parted it out in the parking lot and then called it in as abandoned (to get towed away).

in your case if you just want parts figure out if it'll make you over $550 or if you'll be stuck with a parts car with no title.

car looks very clean, as many have said you could make a good amount of money off of this if you do part it out. from my experience, you need to get a title of some sort. if you can get a reconstructed title some how from this guy, then I would say go for it. you can't really do anything with the car if you don't have a title in hand.

if you do get a title, IMHO I would fix this bad boy up. it really doesn't look to be in bad shape. parting out a car is a real PITA.

Indeed, without a title, of what use is it to you?

For $550 (if you've got the cash just burning a hole in your pocket), pick it up, part it out.

Ran a carfax...heres the last entries from it...I'm confused, how will I get a title? I dont even know who the last owner was and also, it was last reported in '06...

06/07/2006 141,362 Indiana
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Lexington, KY
Title #06402111038 Title issued or updated
New owner reported
Registered as lease vehicle

Don't be confused by the two locations in this record. The title was held in Lexington, Kentucky but the car was registered to be driven in Indiana.

06/20/2006 141,377 Auto Auction Sold at auction
in Indiana
Listed as
a fleet vehicle

Dealers routinely buy and sell millions of used vehicles at auction each year.

08/28/2006 134,500 Dealer Inventory Vehicle offered for sale
INCONSISTENT ODOMETER READING

It is hard to tell whether this reading indicates an odometer rollback or a clerical error. Confirm the mileage with the seller or a qualified mechanic.

The last record reported to CARFAX is from August 2006. While there haven't been any DMV-reported problems, check with the seller to see if they have any service and repair records before you buy.

A lease vehicle, meaning the thing's probably been beat to hell.

The DMV is your best bet, but I wouldn't expect anything good to come of it.

I definately don't have cash buring a hole in my pocket, this max is in ridiculously awesome shape, the interior looks brand new pretty much not even a crease in the leather, It runs well and the outside is in good shape except for the passenger door and drivers dorrs are keyed..

I've been trying to figure out how to get a title today for it and I keep getting the run around with no answers...

ur not gonna b able to register or do nething other than part this car w/o a title. I got a car from my uncle one time and he lost the title and it was a huge PITA to even get the car registered, not to mention i had to pay like $20 and fill out 9000 papers and wait 2 weeks.

Hmm.

What do I need to take to the county clerk's office to get a duplicate Kentucky title?

To get a duplicate title you will need the following:
Form TC96-182 properly completed including the owner section and the vehicle identification section.
Title number OR license plate number
$6.00 (US) plus cost of a notary
Picture ID or driver's license
And the form: www.hccoky.org/pdf/vtr.pdf

Oh, it's in Indiana?

Getting A Duplicate Title

You may order a duplicate title online by establishing a personal myBMV account, which also allows you to access many other online transactions such as registering a new vehicle or updating your personal information. The cost for a duplicate title is $9.
Learn more about myBMV

You may also order a duplicate title by mail or by visiting any Indiana license branch.

Please note that if there is a lien on the vehicle, a duplicate title purchased online or by mail will be sent to the vehicle's lienholder.

To purchase a duplicate title by mail you must download, print and complete the Application for Certificate of Title - State Form 44049. Once you have completed the application, you should mail the application with a check or money order for $9, payable to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, to:

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles
1629 Eastway Drive
Crawfordsville, IN 47933

When completing an Appliction for Certificate of Title in order to obtain a duplicate title, you do not need to provide information such as selling price, purchase date or odometer reading. The BMV cannot accept the title application if any of these fields are filled out, as it invalidates the application. All owners of the vehicle must sign the application.
Form: http://www.in.gov/icpr/webfile/formsdiv/44049.pdf

Actually this one won't work if it requires the owners to sign the form.

Thanks pmohr,

but I just found out the car was never registered in KY, so I'll have to be going through the IN DMV(where it was last registered) to get some answers

For some reason I'm thinking he's not going to buy it just to park it until 2024 (another 15 years).

Might just be me, though

I call BS on this. Most impound lots won't let you get the car out unless you have title showing proof of ownership. I guess if he knew some1 at the impound lot he could get it out without title. i just say move on and forget it. Just notice the headlight is newer on the driver side which means it might have been hit there. Just run away
