31.5 mpgs on my trip
31.5 mpgs on my trip
as the title states i took a trip from upstate ny down to the beaches in delaware and i got 31.5mpgs driving there and back, i was very impressed with the gas mileage, especially since its got 174k and i barely take care of it. This was achieved with the cruise control set at around 72-75 with mobil 87 octane gas.
And yes my math is correct, 568 miles on 18 gallons. 568/18=31.5555

yeah i dont like to drive fast in this car, and it was all highway miles so its a little inflated, mixed city and highway i have gotten a best of 420 to the tank which was around 26mpgs, im very happy with the car, i get the same mileage as my gf's 07 camry with 15k on it, i laugh at her haha
I also miraculously got 28mpg on my last tank. Usually I get 23mpg highway in CT.
I bought a bottle of Chevron Techron, filled up with 87, and the car was sitting for a week.
Then I drove from ct to ny and back 90 miles each way , some stop and go in brooklyn, then drove to work in CT 55miles each way.
I used cruise control at 65-70 mph.
I guess long trips with cruise control , in combination with chevron injector cleaner make a difference.
It also depends where you drive.
In comparison, on our 09 subaru legacy H4 awd, I averaged 37mpg highway on my trip to ny (according to trip computer). The car is advertised as 18 city , 28mpg highway with +- 5mpg difference according to driving conditions. This MPG monitor really helps you to adjust your driving style. I was amazed how sensitive the gas pedal is in relation to instant MPG. Without cruise control it would be hard to achieve such gas mileage.

i should add that the car is a 5 speed, im not sure how you auto guys do but it seems very feasible. cruise control is a must, clear highways also help, i really didnt have to take it off cruise control for traffic or other cars.
I normally get 32mpg on my daily 110 mile round trip commute. The secret is to use cruse control as much as possible and keep speed to around 60mph. I got around 36mpg on a trip to Detroit from Washington D.C. last fall.
I did round trip from NJ to Maxus, the scenic cruise, then back to NJ. 510 miles on one tank of Shell 93 V-Power. About 28mpg overall. I probably could have broken 30 if I didn't use the A/C as much as I did, and hadn't spent so much time idling during the cruise.
But, I granny shift, I run 35 psi, windows closed above 40mph, and I NEVER accelerate uphill. If I'm on a really hilly road, I give it gas going downhill since the engine load is reduced that it's very easy to accelerate, then ease off the gas and just coast uphill with the momentum. Pisses off the cars behind me, when I'm going 90mph, then a moment later I'm down to 50, then another moment and I'm back up to 90.

I dont let my tank get past 3/4, and i get around 340 on that. But it has to be running on 91 octane, no-ethanol. If i put ethanol, that number goes down to around 300, maybe 290 :/
31mpg is nice, i have got 30, once.

Congrats. Although thats pretty normal. Going from Birmingham to Pittsburgh I was getting around 29.5 doing mainly 85 with subs and luggage and another rider. Then from Birmingham to Destin, I was getting 30.5 doing 90 with no subs and no other rider. 230k automatic always 93octane
when it was younger (2003), i pulled 31.7mpg in my 4th gen, autotragic, driving from DC to NJ, in the summer, A/C blastin' most of the time.
as long as u don't dog it, a 4th gen should be able to get 400miles from a usable tank.

I've been driving my old 96 5spd w/ 165k every day to work this summer (115 mile round trip) and have averaged no less than 31mpg on every tank so far. I'd be lucky to get 27 with my 01, not to mention it's keeping the miles off of it. Runs like a champ!

(that's just an estimate since i'm accounting for an all highway trip averaging about 31-32 mpg @ 70ish)
