Air Conditioner / Heater Switch Malfunctioning

Hi everyone!

I have a 96 Maxima SE, and all of a sudden, the Heater/AC switch stopped operating in positions 1, 2 and 3. The 4th position works great, but I may not want the heat or air on full blast all the time. Occasionally the light goes out behind the switch also, but I can make it come back on by tapping it, most of the time. I wonder if this is a common problem, because my father has a 95 Maxima, and his doesn’t work either; He is lucky though… only the first position on his stopped working. The interesting thing here is this… lets say that I have the AC switch pushed in, and turn the dial to position 1 2 or 3, I can hear the compressor turn on, so I see it is working somewhat, just not turning the fan on. Anyone else run into this? If so, what did you do to fix it??

Also, thank you to everyone who posted information on changing the gauge lights! I put some blue lights in yesterday, and it looks great!! I wonder if there is a way to change the lighting for the heater/ac unit, so it all matches up! Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks in advance for the help! What a great list!

There is a resistor assembly mounted on the air duct close to the blower
motor. That part has failed. It is used to control fan speeds 1, 2, and
3. Speed 4 is the maximum blower motor speed, so no resistors are
involved. Replacing the resistor assembly is something the home mechanic
can do. The only tool needed is a Phillips head screwdriver.
The Haynes manual has a good photo of this part on page 3-8.

Very common Nissan problem. Everyone I know who has a Nissan has had their HVAC fan resistors fail.

Basically, the default position for the resistor is "no resistance" which amounts to the fan at 4.

As stated previously, it is in the air duct close to the blower motor. Get your head under the dashboard on the passenger side. The blower motor is in plain view. Notice the bundle of wires leading away from the blower motor. It leads to the resistor assembly, situated only two to three inches from the blower motor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove two Phillips head screws and the resistor assembly falls into your hand.

Famous saying: one picture is worth a thousand words. The Haynes manual has a good picture on page 3-8. You can buy this book at any large bookstore (Barnes & Noble, BookStar, Borders) or auto parts store (AutoZone, etc.). You may find it on the shelf at your local public library.
