Ok, long story short my jack-*** of a local mechanic that I trust installed the clutch and flywheel wrong in my maxima, chewing-up the crankshaft basically. Pulled tranny originally for clutch job, flywheel is warped, bolt to crank are stripped or broke. Tapped new threads and car is drivable.

I need a rebuild or new bottom end. Might as well bolt up a 3.5 bottom end.

I am using my VQ30 heads and timing, as well as my existing 5spd tranny. It's a 96 so OBD1.....


WHat do I need specifically sensor wise?

VQ30 clutch and flywheel bolt up to 3.5?

Who's selling a 3.5 bottom end or where can I get one?

I noticed you said you will be using the VQ30 heads and timing, does that mean you are looking for a VQ35 block/pistons/crank/etc. or by bottom end do you mean just using the VQ35 crankshaft and rods?

I believe if you go the second route, it is a direct swap and bolts right in and effectively strokes your VQ30 to 3.3 liters. In this case pretty much the only thing you are changing is the crank and rods, so as far as sensors or any other modification goes, you don't have to do anything.

If you go the first route, normally I see them sold as complete engines so if you do that I figure you might as well just do a full VQ35 swap, heads and all. Most people just swap over the timing equipment and use a 2001 Pathfinder cable driven throttle body so they don't have to mess with the ECU and wiring harnesses. Most complete engines will come with all the sensors, but even in this case, most are interchangeable between the VQ35 and VQ30.

I am by no means an expert on this though, so if that is the route you choose to go, I would definitely sit down for a solid day or two and just search and pour through all the detailed threads and guides in the all motor section.

 

Yup. And also just FYI OBD2 was the standard in 1996. So for any other car out there, not just Maximas, everything 1996 or newer has OBDII.

As far as who's selling, why not ask in the correct place? The classifieds...

Just do a whole 3.5 swap, you're only asking for trouble mixing and matching parts like you plan.



Indeed. First everyone thinks that the '95s are OBD-I, now it's been bumped up to '96 apparently

 

i have a 95 and its obd2, auto zone scanner works on my car too.

 

1) ALL, every single one, of the 4th gens are OBD-2. Every single one. Period. There is no such thing as an OBDI 4th gen.
2) Why the world would you go through the work of putting VQ30 heads on a VQ35 when it is far far far far more work, and would yield less power than using vq35 heads because vq35 heads flow so much better, cool better, etc?
3) Why would you post in the regular 4th gen forum asking who's selling a VQ35 rather than look in the "for sale" forum or on one of the many car part finding sites on the internet?

You need to do less posting and more reading before you even think of attempting this.
