Gear Oil (MT only)
My 98 MAX SE has 169k on it and from the previous owners records, they never changed the gear oil in the gear box. In the owners manual it suggests 100k to be done.
Does anyone have any suggestions on gear oil for the gearbox and how difficult is it to change?
I like working on my own car and want to change it myself (cheaper and more satisfying to do myself).
Thank you for any suggestions and help.

Did you search, or try to read up on this yet?
Did you check the appropriate subforum?

Just wait for the temps to drop, it'll get notchy. That's why I got 1qt of redline MTL to put in along with 3+ qts of mt-90...

Back then, I had to search to find GL-4, but finally found SAE 85W90 GL-4 Hypoid Gear Oil made by Sta-Lube. I bought a gallon ($8.49) and 1 qt. ($2.49) at a Napa store in SE MA, and had 1/2 qt. left over.
Now, 9 years later and at 206K miles, I think it's time to change the trans. oil again.

When I did my clutch last year I put in Royal Purple cuz I wasnt able to find Redline locally and then when people found out I used Royal Purple instead of Redline they all started telling how I should've gone with Redline bla bla bla so this time I got my trans rebuilt, I searched and found MT-90 locally for 10-12 bucks a quart at a few shops. Cant quite feel a difference but I guess we'll find out in the cold season... Is there something else I should've tossed in there beside MT90?

Thanks everyone for the help. I should definitely be able to do this procedure myself.

Gear oil
I've used this Amsoil on several Nissan and Toyota transmissions. Really works well .Specifically designed for manual gear boxes .

Ive run mt 90, mt 90/mtl mix, mtg, and napa sta-lube. they all worked fine except sta lube which is like molasses and sucks big time in cold climates.
Anyhow dont remove the neutral safety switch to drain through. You will break it or loose a part. Use the drain plug at the back of the tranny near the shift rod. Its hard to get to and easy to miss but its the best way.
