Changing Wheel size from 15` to 16` ?

Hi

97 GXE...Factory original steel 15` wheels...

If I put 16` wheels and tires , will it make the car any faster ? will it make the speedo reading lower than the actual speed ?

Lol @ making your car faster.

Check out the tire/wheel forum and find the tire calculator. It will tell you how off your speedo will be. Most likely it'll be really low, like 1-2% off.

How would going up in size make your car 'faster'?

No.

As far as your speedo difference, it would be helpful if you actually mentioned what size tires, but you neglected to do so.

What kind of 16" wheels are you thinking of putting on? It won't really make the car "faster" if you are just changing 15" steel to 16" Alum stocks. The weight of each is relatively the same with the AS-tires on.

The engine actully needs to work harder to turn over a larger diameter rim (rotational force goes up). That is the reason why I wonder why people want SUPER-huge rims on their Max. Say someone trying to put 20" rims on their Max. It is like a to your performance. If you have a super light 16" rim, then maybe you can increase the car's speed...but not sure.

If you are just talking about speedo speed, I think the overall diameter of the tires themselves are relatively the same...so I think you will be just changing the cosmetic look of your car. Your speedo will not change much....maybe a mile per hour or 2.

haha...you're input is really silly, don't repeat it again

I was asking about rims weight and size and whether they affect speed or not...

tires from 205/65/15 ------------------> 215/55/16

the math goes like this

if your tire size is AAA/BB/CC

multiply AAA by BB/1270, then add CC. That will give you the total outer diameter of the tire, in inches.

205/65/15 = 25.5" OD
215/55/16 = 25.3" OD

So the speedo might read a little low, but not much - only about 0.8% difference, which means when your speedo says 60mph, your car is actually going 59.5mph.

A little more info to add to this....I found the difference in weight from the 16" Stock Alum to the 15" Steelie (assuming steel cause of the tire and wheel post trim type)

As follows:

Maxima 95-99 GLE 15x6.5 (16.5)
Maxima 95-99 SE 16x6.5 (19.6)

If you go to 16" Stock Alums.. you will be adding 12.4 lbs to the car with just the rims alone....I didn't take any tire weights into account with this increase....assuming not much of a difference.

FYI, the 95-96 SEs were 15s like the 97-99 GLEs.
97-99 SEs were the 16s.

I copied these rim specs from the tire and wheel posts. I know about the differences of rim sizes and what trim packages they came with. I have a 98 Max SE with the stock 5 spoke 16" rims. I do know there are some trim packages that came with 15" alums, but the post did not specify alum 15" or steel 15"

The GLE would be honeycombs for 95-96, and sawblades for 97-99. The steel 15" wheels, which probably weigh different from the alloys, were on the 95-99 GXE.

Any difference will be non-consequential, but I feel the 16"s look WAY better than the 15"s, at least as far as stock wheels go.

I have a hard time believing a steel wheel weighs LESS than an alloy wheel even with the inch diameter difference.
