ALTERNATOR OR BATTERY ?! PLZ HELP FAST !
ok , in my new 96 gle max, the problem is that when i try to turn the car on , it doesnt turn on , so i give it a jump then it works kinda fine, but something else weird happens, it worked 2 times by itself without a jump, took like 7 secs to start but worked, but the problem is that the car wont rise above 2k rpm , like the rpm meter would bounce up and down, and the car would seem like u giving it a lot of gas and it like jumps as if it ran out of gas?
now i don't see any "brake , battery" lights when the car is on, but i do have a CEl which the owner claims is because of an o2 sensor, do you think the problem is from the battery or alternator? or both ? oh and by the way, the high beams and wipers don't work also, which i highly think is because the alt... what do you all think, and for the 2k rpm thing, is it because the o2 sensor or because the car doesn't have enough juice from the battery maybe ??? tell me what do you all know from experience, because all of you are better than all the mechanics in my city IMHO lol
Please help me as soon as you can because i need to buy the parts soon..
thanks for your time =]

does the car shut itself off after a little while of running? It sounds to me like the alt is bad. Have you checked what voltage you are getting at your battery with the car running? O2 sensor wouldn't restrict your rpm's it would just send your car into safe mode.
check the voltage at the battery and if it isn't up around 14 while running take your alternator out and go get it checked. Dont drive with a bad alternator all the unburnt fuel is no bueno for your catalytic converters

yea thats pretty detailed and enough! thanks for the help =]
ok i will be getting a 140W alternator right now. the other thing is that, i heard that if the alt is bad, the battery usually dies with it, and my battery i think is stock and the car is like 13 years old lol. so should i replace it even with a cheap one?
and what do you think the o2 sensor will do? like is it something i should change asap or what?

O2 sensor have nothing to do with that. O2 sensors determine you A/F ratio that will effect your fuel economy. Before changing the alt check what voltage you get at idle. it should be around ~14 volts. To check the battery after driving a car check voltage when the car is off it should about around ~12V. Leave it over night and then check voltage again if its anywhere below 10.5 V change the battery.

omg.. thats why my gas economy sucks very much then
....and ill prolly end up with a new battery because i dont want to risk it, and they are preety cheap besides mines is very old, should i get a new grounding kit, or wires or anything. or is the stock one decent?
stock wiring is fine.
Suggestion: if you're going to get a new battery anyway. Why not just try that first. Buy a new battery, pop it in, and see if that works before buying a new alternator.
You can have the codes read at autozone, just as mentioned above, or you can do it yourself.
