Header Back Exhaust cost

I just had the exhaust in my '96 GLE go somewhere in front near the header.
I already knew that the main catalytic converter needed replacing, so I have a suspicion that there may be a hole in the pre-cat probably necessitating that I replace everything back from the exhaust header. I understand that the pre-cat price is ridiculous, and am wondering if anyone has an idea what the prices for the the entire exhaust: pre-cat, cat, muffler and resonator will cost. I have a feeling it will be over $1000 for the parts alone. I am on my second oem exhaust system, so I remember the price as being fairly high for the oem cat back. Any suggestions that might save me some money are welcome.

Thanks,

Phil

Why go OEM? Its retardly stoopid expensive. Get a Y pipe, hi flow cat, a B pipe and muffler. Could get a used 5th gen muffler. It will still be quiet, and will still pass inspection. That will probably run you about $600 total.

Will try to find non-oem parts

Thanks for the suggestion guys.
I already checked into a non oem cat that was around $150, I think a non-oem pre cat is $300. I would have to find a place that would install a Y pipe rather than the pre cat. Who sells Y pipes?

I've had bad experiences with non oem exhausts (excluding cat parts) in the past. One non oem system on a Saab I used to own barely lasted a couple years. Granted I may not keep the car itself long, but I don't want to get junk non oem either.

There is a cat in the f/s forums made by Magnaflow right now for $50 new. The Ypipe eliminates the precats... meaning, get a Y, and you dont have to get precats.

Just stick to decent stuff and you'll be fine. Read the stickies if you have any questions.

I got my warpspeed ypipe/magnaflow cat combo on eBay for 200, and then I bid on a warpspeed catback exhaust for like 120 on eBay also. It's worth alot more, but that's why eBay is great. I don't believe they make that exhaust anymore. If you check warpspeeds site, I believe they just sell pacesetter catbacks. And then I got it all installed at my local muffler shop for 130. I suggest getting a warpspeed ypipe, and then look for a nice 2 1/4 inch catback off eBay or the forum classifieds.

Is Warpspeed best?

Hmm,

I looked up these non Warpspeed items on ebay and wonder if they are any good:

Warpspeed Exhaust Manifold Back System

I finally found the Warpspeed listing for the entire system:
http://www.warpspeedperformance.com/nissan.htm

R33GXE, how much "louder than stock" is your exhaust system? I really don't want a louder system.

I wouldn't go with that cheap eBay crap. It will be loud as heck, and is very cheaply made. Name brand is a must when it comes to exhaust. My exhaust sounds great. No rasp. Just a tad, louder then stock, but in a good way. Paired with a CAI, it sounds amazing especially above 3 grand.

Yeah like I said, that's pacesetter or "monza" exhaust on their site. Good, but not the route I'd go. Probably louder then you'd want too.

Thanks for the info

R33,

Thanks. I ordered the Y pipe and CAT from Warpspeed today as well as a low cost Bosal resonator and muffler from another company.

I will have to put the car on a ramp and see how hard dropping the present pre-cat pipe will be.

I would prefer to have someone do it. I am going to ask a custom exhaust place nearby if they will. I do hope I can find someone that will put someone else's parts on. Most places don't like to do this. How much money do you think (mind you Boston is expensive) is a fair price for bolting my manifold back system into the car??

13 Years of New England Ice and Snow

I am really worried that the studs will be so rusty that I could not remove the nuts from the manifold if I do it myself. I also have to remove and replace the metal mount at the front of the main cat because it is probably rusted out. Supposedly Warpspeed includes this with the assembly.

i just got my header back done not 20 minutes ago, budget Y, test pipe, 10 inch resonator, and pacesetter muffler.
cost me 60 bucks to have them do it all from a small shop, glances were exchanged about the test pipe but all went well. i couldnt do it without a shop because most of the aftermarket stuff didnt come with brackets for it.

and the sound? quieter than stock at idle-2k, untill...

Encouraging

ThreePoint0, I take it you did not have problems with the studs.
Handson, your price sounds very reasonable. I have to drive to a custom muffler shop today and ask if they will do it.

yeah it was by far the best price for anything ive ever paid,
watch out for the shady guys though, my old shop in akron charged my 364$ to replace my resonator to the back of the muffler, some guys are just shady.
but that was back when i was new to the car scene. and to me Price=quality.
today the shop guy laughed because the old guy didn't weld the pipe to the resonator...he just stuck it in. i decided to check it off as a being scammed...

Got better price from RockAuto

el_colombiano,

I got the garden variety oem replacement bosal resonator/pipe and muffler from RockAuto, www.RockAuto.com, part numbers (my 96 should be the same as a 95: BOSAL p/n 145703 and BOSAL p/n 287703 both for around $200 including shipping. I chose RockAuto because they actually have a live person that answers the phone and a physical address, instead of all the other internet shops that you can never get a hold of someone.

Unless things have changed, Pacesetter sounds like $hit in a can...

Dont get it...

Invest in a can of "PB Blaster" Spray it on the bolts on both sides (head and the nut side) give it a couple taps with a wrench or something and let it soak for a few. That stuff works wonders, i have yet to run into a bolt that it hasnt broken free...

While your there why dont you just have them quote you on bending you new exaust? Cheaper than buying any catback and will be just as good in quality if not better...Get yourself a cheap baffled muffler and your on your way...

Will give PB Blaster a try

The weather should be nicer tomorrow, so I will try to put the front end on a ramp and put some PB Blaster on the studs. The bosal resonator and muffler should be here tomorrow, but I'm not expecting the warpspeed Y pipe and cat to ship till Monday, so I may not have those parts until next Friday.
