M.A.F Sensor Ghost
I purchased my 1998 Max back in March with 196,xxx miles and after about a month I started having issues like low idle and stalling . So i pulled the code and it says MAF. I go to the junk yard and pick up a used one and everything is running fine for about 90 days. Well yesterday the same symptoms popped up with the junkyard MAF. Well i swapped the junk yard MAF back out with the original and everything is running fine. Is there something else that may cause the MAF to act eractic like this.I cleaned them bouth with the MAF cleaner stuff. Current mileage 205,xxx

Hey I'm having a similar issue with my 1997 Max (gle), I purchased it back in 2005 with 63k miles, it currently has about 95k. Back on saturday (rainy, wet day) I went to start it up to go to work, it cranked over fine and then I noticed that I was getting a rough idle before it just sputtered out and died. After a little research on here I figured it was probably the MAF, so on monday(sunny, beautiful day) I replaced that, cleaned out the throttle body a bit, and it started up and drove better than ever. Well, it rained last night, and when I started it up this morning, It started up fine...when I went to put it in reverse it just died....tried over and over again with the same issue.
Any idea on what this could be? I do have an engine light, could any other sensor be causing this problem besides the MAF? Replacing the MAF seems to have helped but not solved the problem.

Well, since I thought I had the car running, I was planning on taking it to autozone today by my barbershop to get the CEL checked, obtain a code, and get that resolved...because even after I changed the MAF, my CEL didn't go away...unfortunately I couldn't even get my car out of my lot
About that CEL though, I've had it for a while, but it used to just appear and disappear on a whim. It used to appear usually after I filled up the tank ( I've only used premium gas since I've had the car by the way), then go away on it's own. a mechanic once told me that it's probably a faulty gas cap or something and I shouldn't worry about it so I took his advice...that may have been a stupid mistake. For the past couple of months though it hadn't disappeared and I was meaning to get it checked again but the car crapped out on me before I could even do that.
What gets me is how great it was running yesterday though, I was patting myself on the back for a job well done and everything until this morning. Could it be the TPS sensor? Dirty IACV? Before I changed the MAF the car would start up and die on it's own...as of this morning it starts up fine, but doesn't die until I try to put it into drive or reverse, or give it gas.

Pull the codes, go from there.

Well, I found out that the maf i replaced the old one with was no good, so I took it back and had a brand new one installed, she starts up and drives fine now...I still have two codes for two o2 sensors that need to be replaced, plan to do that soon.
Quick question though: When I took my first maf that went bad to the parts place and swapped it for the second one that turned out to be bad as well, I forgot to keep the cores...I'm in the process right now of getting them sent back from the manafacturer but that could take a week or more...the new maf I have in right now has no cores, but I'm trying to get my original cores back so I can save money by not having to get new one...am I taking a risk by doing this? Should I just have the new ones put in and be done with it?
