Is there a seal/gasket for the torque converter housing case? I can't find it on courtesyparts or in the FSM.

 

I dont think there is any gaskets there

 

the converter should be welded so if its leaking its broke and needs to be replaced. i dont think that you broke a converter with anything less than 500 hp or so. however their are 2 seals inside the bellhousing (converter housing) one is the rear main seal on the motor the other is the front main seal on the trans (also known as the pump seal or input shaft seal). so you need to find out if you are leaking motor oil or trans fluid and have the seal replaced. if your leaking trans fluid it should be red in color unless it has not been changed in a while then it will be a dark color and smell burnt. motor oil will be honey color unless its been a while since change then it will be black.

 

I believe hes referring to the bellhousing, however I dont know the answer. Probably use anearobic or silicone sealer.

 

Well, what the hell is that end cap called on the auto tranny, at the opposite end from the RMS? It has red RTV on it, is screwed in with 10mm self sealing bolts and a bunch of normal bolts, I'm assuming there is a gasket there and not a weld because of the sealant. I don't think I used the right vocabulary.

 

are you talking about where the trans bolts to the motor? like right under the throttle body?

 

No. Right next to the wheel well on the drivers side, the cap is facing the inside of the driver's side wheel. I think the FSM calls it the "side cover" AT-146, but I don't see a gasket. It looks like a gasket belongs there, since there's RTV. Anyway it's leaking AT fluid out of there and I need to fix it..

 

oh that do-hicky yes their should be a gasket there but be warned than when it is removed about 80% of your trans fluid should come out as well. im not 100% sure on the auto trans that come in the maximas but their might be a drain plug on the bottom or the trans that u should drain your trans fluid before you remove that pan to keep the mess to a minimum. expect about 12 qts of fluid. you might not get all that much but just be ready for that much.

 

well, maybe not the inside of the wheel, more like the inside of the driver's side front fender...

 

do you have the part number for the gasket, I can't find the damn thing on courtesy parts, the FSM shows a hand globbing "locking sealant" on the mating surface AT-225, but is there a gasket on there too? It doesn't feel right only putting sealant on there, and no gasket, I'm not a machanic (in case it's not obvious hr hr hr)

 

a lot of factory gaskets have been superseeded by RTV (silicone) just take the pan off and make sure that that you clean all the old stuff off real good. might hae to use a razor blade to get it all off and clean make sure to leave no oily residue. then get your self some black RTV. the black stuff seems to work the best and put a 1/4" bead all the way around the surface making sure to get around al the bolt holes and bolt the pan back on. if you can let it stand for about an hour or so before you put fluid back in to let the RTV set up a little
