Battery Drain

'96 Auto

When i turn off the car, and let the car sit for 5 or more minutes the battery drops to 8ish volts so the car wont start.

So checked maybe a light or something is on. cant find any obvious problems.

So i jump the car and check the voltage 13+ (running).

Let it run for 2 minutes, turn it off. check volts- in the 12's.
So my alternator is working. [New Alternator]
I had the battery checked before got new alternator.

so ive been taking off the Pos. cable to the battery when i park the car somewhere for long periods of time. and its been working fine starts right up and everything, after the cables back on. so i figure somethings draining it.

Would like to fix asap the cable removal got real annoying real fast (kind of embarrassing too lol)

the alternator should charge at 14.43 roughly. thats average for brand new oem alternator. as for the drain, you'd have to find out whats leaking to pinpoint it and repair it. worst comes to worst you can ghetto it by throwing a toggle inside the car for the battery. think of it as extra security lol

Yeah..MY 96 is having the same problem..Alt and battery are 1.5 yrs old and are working fine(per advance auto)but there is a big drain..went to
nissan dealer and purchased a positive terminal($8.00)None of the advance and autozone stuff would work for me..and plus i yanked the trunk fuse..Hope that works.
Truck mechanism barely opens trunk anymore..After reading some post,i'm guessing it's a bad trunk switch..That may be your problem too..

Put an amp meter in line with the battery. Then start pulling fuses until you see the draw stop. The fuse that causes the draw to stop will guide you to the device that's draining your battery.

+1^^, Also remove your trunk, glove box, and underhood lights to eliminate the possibilities, as one may be the culprit.

agreed with the two guys above. ^^^^^^

Check for shorts to ground, make sure the battery is actually "good"

just because a new battery is new, doesn't mean that it CAN'T go bad.

do you accidentally leave your parking lights on? Do you have a giant sound system that draws nothing But current?

but as stated before, by the guy above this guy.. hook up an am meter inline with your battery cable and start pulling fuses.

get another battery? because if it drains it that much, you might have lost a charge too?

i dunno.. i'm just giving tips.. not solutions.. correct me if i am wrong.

Amp meter??(sorry still kinda new to DIY)
so your saying jump the car w/ the meter on then pull individual fuse then turn it off seeing if it drains down.[this could take a while 20+ fuses] and then when i come across the one that doesnt have it drain. follow that fuse to the prob.

but when i get to the prob source would it be like a bad ground or something like that.
