after market stereo and empty dash space
after market stereo and empty dash space
I have a single-DIN sized aftermarket stereo installed in my 96 SE, and as a result there is a gap the size of a stereo below mine. When I got the car used this summer, there was a piece of black plastic below the stereo, but when I swapped it for my stereo, I left the plastic out.
I was wondering what people have done to fill this space? I was hoping to do something that would be able to hold a few switches.
thanks

Or you could add on a DVD player with a fold-out screen like the Alpine or Kenwood...
Or you could swap out the single DIN unit for a double-DIN Eclipse mobile DVD player... (and have a nice, big screen for that PS2 install)...
Or you could save that black piece of plastic, cut some holes in it with a holesaw and install gauges... or use that panel to install switches (extra fog lamps, N2O bottle opener and activation switch, etc...).
Gotta love those double-DIN spaces!

Besides, I don't want to give up my combo MD/CD head unit
The only reason I didn't want to use the same piece of plastic is because it doesn't match the car at all (it's not the same color black, and it doesn't even have a smooth finish to it). You know of any plastic that's a good match?

Ah. If you wanted to mount things in that space, you could go with a piece of black ABS plastic, or even plexiglass if you wanted to cut holes for gauges or switches.
If you wanted to just cover the space, and didn't care about rigidity, you could use a piece of black neoprene and just double-sided tape or velcro it in place. I used some cut pieces of neoprene to fill in the gaps around the sides of the CB radio I put into that space. Actually looks better than you would think.
At least in the 99 GXE, there is another pocket below that with a hinged door. If you remove that door and the pocket, there is additional space for gauges, Halmeter A/F meter, boost control, etc... or more switches. It's harder to cut a piece of plastic to fit in there, though. I was using aluminum sheet to cover that hole and mount switches and mini-gauges, but took them out because it looked kind of strange (never occured to me to paint the aluminum black). D'oh!

That's a perfect place for a signal processor, but if you don't want to get another audio componenet, there are other things to put there. You could get some kind of storage pocket, but I never use the one in the third DIN space at the bottom, so I wouldn't consider that. You could put 3 gauges there. You could get a piece of plexiglass, cut it to fit, and paint the back of the plexiglass any color you want to (colormatch it the interior, exterior, chrome, custom design or logo, etc.).
