Suspension Install Help...

Hello all, Im planning my suspension install and I was wondering what parts usually have to be changed/replaced???

I decided on a KYB GR2/H&R setup.... But Changing out the Mounts are suggested...

Besides the mounts and Bumpstop/Dust Boots what else is needed???

There are so many different little parts (bumper boot, insulator spacer, bracket, bearing, seat ect...) These small parts from the dealership adds up... $250+

I'd hate to take my suspension apart and need a part...

So what should be on my parts list?

Thanks

Definitly change out the mounts, because there going to cushion your ride and keep your ride quiet and comfortable. If you want a complete ride you will have to get every little parts that are listed in here to make it a perfect ride. if you change the struts and shocks without the brackets, bearing and ect. The parts will get rusted and wear out quicker and your ride will be a stiff one. The parts will not be seated right and it will not do the job It's supposed to do.

Opinions will indeed differ on this topic. From my limited experience ( KYB GR2 ), I only replaced the bumpstops and related boots as the old ones were toast. Was tempted to replace the mounts, but didn't. No regrets so far, but I've only had about 1000 miles since the change over.

So my advice, bumper and boots for sure, front and rear - from the dealership - mount kit if you are compelled - from an auto parts store, for the fronts only.

If you have the time to dissassemble and inspect after removal, you can get a better idea as to what really needs replacement and save a little money.
Be sure that you dont' remove both back shock/struts at the same time without supporting the axle.

Mounts for sure. Once you get everything off, look to see if anything is bad rusted or worn. If it isn't then don't get them. I purchased dust boots from the dealer when I lowered mine, and I had to trim off so much I ended up taking them completely off. That was a waste of money. I'm dropped on progress which isn't much lower than h&r.

your best bet for dust boots are getting the kyb ones. they come with shortened bumpstops and eveything. The fitment isnt the best but they do the job. I just did mine and i didnt replace the mounts but i did replace the strut bearings on the front. i bought all this stuff from rock auto because it was the cheapest place. Bumpstops and boots r probably the most important thing, followed by strut bearings, followed by strut mounts. My strut mounts looked pretty good so i decided to save the $80.

The dust boots are always shot on 4th gens if they are original. I usually get away with reusing the rest. If you end up needing mounts or bearings you can usually find them short notice at the auto parts store.

Try to get some Energy Suspension sway bar bushings, I'll be getting a set for when I lower the car. It's easy to do too:

Here's the write up on how to swap out the struts/springs. I followed it step by step and had no problems. GL:

Thanks for all the replies guys...

As for the Mounts, they are originals with 190,xxx miles.... along with all the other hardware on the struts... So for piece of mind Im thinking change the rubber parts (Mounts, Bearing, bottom seat insulator ect.) Its just the mileage on these parts are high... I gotta price out the parts because dealer parts are expensive for little rubber parts...

KYB Bumpstops/Dust boots are on the list...

Thanks for the write-up Chris... BTW I have a complete Energy-Suspension Bushing Set installed... I did this with my Raxles and Rack Bushing replacement...

Yeah Acckshun, we should have a complete sticky with photos like the above from NicoClub.

If I don't punk out and get someone else to do the job, I will take photos and do a write up. I started a write up on changing the door inserts from cloth to leather. Half way through I forgot to take pictures. Lol

hopefully my car will thank me by staying around longer.

yep, I also installed new control arms with new bushings and ball joints, addco rear swaybar, and tokico HP's with 1.8" and 1.5" drop springs all around. so handling is fantastic and wheel hop is under control at the track.

The Tokico springs are 1.25" all the way around, but drop a little more when settled. I don't think as far as 1.8"F and 1.5"R but .
