Alternator or starter ?

Hi...I made some searches but nothing seems to be like what I'm experiencing with the car !
my car started 2 or 3 days ago to start not briskly as it was before, especially after short trips....
today at morning , it was cold (18F) , I crancked it , it crancked slowly then it kinda "chocked" and stoped ... tried it again and it was even slower in crancking...I have waited on "on" key position for seconds then third time I crancked , it was dead.........lights inside and out all work, horn also work like normal ...I don't know but the power from the battery seems to be normal , (does the starter maybe needs more power to start the car ?)...I left the car for about 2 and a half hours..........came back and it cracnked then started normaly.........
I don't know if it's a considence , but I have little rattles from the belts areas (idle pulley is going bad ?) ..................
Now do I have a bad battery , alternator or starter ???
no cel by the way...177k car,tb,iacv, maf cleaned months before, spark plugs and fuel filter were replaced not long ago, battery is 2.5 years old

another thing ,the starter used to(from time to time, maybe once a week or 2 weeks) to run when I cranck the engine and it seems like it runs without engaging the fly wheel,,only once then it starts fine in the second time...however never failed to start before

any helpful comments appreciated...

i fixed a vw with this problem, you're gonna wanna check your your battery connections and grounds/other wires off the battery, starter and off the alternator, a wire could be broken or loose.

Try getting a jump start, if it gives the same behavior,ur starter is dead.

I'd say it's your starter. One clear symptom of a dying starter is that it'll crank slow...almost as if you have a low battery. Also if the starter sounds like its skipping or stuttering while cranking, that's another good indication.

As long as battery connections are clean and tight and headlights are bright it sounds like a bad starter. The starter is easy to change.

If your battery is good, then I would suspect the starter. Remove it and bench test it or take it to an auto parts store. They should be able to verify that it's bad. Could just be a bad solenoid. I regreased my starter recently and replaced the solenoid rather than get another starter. Cost me $30 vs. $130.

I think the starter is your culprit. However, I don't think your battery is 100%, either. Take the car to an Autozone parts store and have them do a load test on your battery. Its free, so no damage to your wallet.

Ignition switches are a problem for us. they tend to cause slow starting and seem to get worse in colder weather.

Sounds like a bad solenoid. Most likely dirty or worn. I had the exact same problem. The solenoid in the starter gets worn and doesn't make good contact so it doesn't deliver enough voltage to the starter to give it a good oomph to start right away. Soon or later your starter will stop working all together. Get a Nissan rebuilt starter. I got a cheap Napa one that the dealer put in and it had run-on and lasted barely a year. The Nissan rebuilt on has a foam shield to keep dirt out of the starter and was noticeably stronger on starts.

you said it did it while it was really cold. It could also be the type of oil you put in your car. Oil seems to get sluggish when its cold and its hard for motor parts to turn. Change your oil to synthetic in winters.
