three way catalyst

Hey all..wondering if something can be clarified. The CEL came on and i checked the codes via the vbx maxima site, and it yielded a result of "three way catalyst (right bank)" I'm interested in exactly what that is... I'm assuming its an O2 sensor...but which one? I replaced all three about three years ago when I installed the budget y pipe.

Thanks in advance for all of your wisdom...

Last fall, I replaced the oem cat converter since a hole had rotted out with a warpspeed cat. The car is stock except for the y-pipe, and has 167k on it. A couple of weeks ago, I replaced the pcv valve and fuel filter with oem, and also took the tb off and cleaned it.

What does that three way catalyst mean? I've searched and found no definitive info.. Thanks

If you run a search on 'three way catalyst', you'll find lots of info. Quicker that bumping your thread.

I replaced the rear exhaust manifold O2 sensor in the y pipe per the suggestion of a mechanic friend that hooked up his diag tool to the car....and the cel came back on. What could be wrong?

Is it the O2 sensor behind the cat...or could the cat converter itself be the problem?

Since you don't indicate what year you are, i checked my 98 code. It doesn't say anything about O2 sensor - what made your 'buddy' think that? Did you R&R the cat fall 09 or 08? Either way, that's prob the issue. Look up pmohr's code reader to see the probable causes - they're listed in order of probability and 02 isn't there. The exh tube leak or intake leak would be giving bad O2 mix at the sensor, and the injectors would be making burn too lean or rich. the codes have the answers, just not the 'Exact' answer.

Per FSM, I dont see any code for p0702. Rescan and get back to us.

But if the Cat is all rusty underneath and has a whole in it and making alotta noise, then yes time to replace the Cat.

Code 0702 from the ECU, not a scan, shows 3 way catalyst and causes.
