hole in exhaust?

when it comes to cars, i know close to nothing..so when my max started making a pretty nasty sound one day i went to the mechanic and he said something about a hole in the exhaust and the cat converter thing..so i was wondering what this all means b/c he didnt really explain anything all he said was something about being under the engine and holding it (that may have came out very wrong, or he could have been talking about something else, lol sorry) soo i just wanted to know what this all meant and what the cheapest and/or best fix for it would be..

my brother told me my car sounds like a ricer...if that helps?

thanks!

put your car on ramps and take a look under yourself. inspect the muffler and the cats for any rust spots/holes. find which one needs replacing and replace it yourself. There only a couple bolts. For the cats, it could be a pain as the bolts could be seized. I had to blowtorch mine off.

ok well thats good to know.. i know that the mechanic said that the muffler looks pretty rotted but he said its only the outer wall and not the source of the noise. i went to another mechanic today and he said it sounds like the flex pipe, but he is going to give it a good look tomorrow afternoon. my brother told me to buy a warpspeed y pipe?, will that fix the problem im having? i want to know a cheap fix and hopefully my brother can install it if its as easy as you say it is...

well you could also just turn the car on, rev it a bit to hear where the noise is coming from. if it is indeed the flex pipe, i would just buy an aftermarket y-pipe to be honest.
just buy the warpspeed aluminized one, take it to a shop and have them install it if you don't have time or the necessary tools.

A hole in the muffler on a equal length y-pipe (aka stock, or cattman) max won't sound like rice... it'd actually sound pretty nice imo .

ok well a mechanic told me it was the flex pipe and he said that he would charge me $250 to replace it. is that a good price? i asked him about getting after market parts and he said its not worth it unless i replace the whole exhaust system....

fwiw, i remember someone mentioning seafoam to find exhaust leaks.

i would not spend 250 on just a flex section repair.
get a warp speed y pipe for 200 pay for labor and enjoy...

as for getting the whole exhaust system replaced, i disagree, you can replace what's bad to save money.
i got my y pipe flex section replaced / welded(don't remember how much), got a new bosal b pipe and muffler (about 100 each + gaskets and hangers)
