Why do my RPM's jump when I press the brakes?
So, I'm sitting at a red light yesterday like any other day. As it turns green, I slowly hit the gas and all of a sudden, the RPM's drop down to almost 0 and then shoot back up. It felt like the car was going to completely turn off. It did this 3 times that day.
Now, every time I press on the brakes the RPM's shoot up from about 1500 to 2000. I'm just cruising, doing about 45mph and if I press the brake to slow down, the car slightly jerks and the RPM's shoot up. Any ideas?
*When I bought the car from achebee4you last year, the CEL light was on which was caused by the EGR valve being dirty. This has not been corrected yet. Could this be a reason why my max is performing this way??

Silver Bullet Your sig is too HUGE Fix It.
To the OP; you could have a number of problems.. EGR, Vac Leak, MAF, IACV.. start with the easiest first.. Clean everything up; IACV TB, MAF (be gentle),if problems persists, get some starting fluid and spray it around the intake manifold and plenum nad what not and check for a vac leak..
have you done anything to the car in recent history?

Does it do it when you press the brakes without the car moving? Given the braking relationship I would at least check the condition of the hose going to the brake booster. I would also be inclined to clamp shut the brake booster hose and see how it behaves under those conditions. Beware that it will be a lot harder to actuate the brakes without that vacume so you might consider doing it on a stretch of road where there is not a lot of traffic.
