So in the summer I purchased a budget y-pipe, had it installed and till than I was waiting for the funds to buy a cat back.

My buddy had a Maxima that ended up going on him(his was 95) He had a full custom catback with a magnaflow muffler....all 2.5". His car never clunked with it on but now that its on my car it has been clunking. I have a 96 and I know they have the same style exhuast.

Now its not hitting any part of the underbody, all the hangers are brand new. Its the rear beam that hits it when i go over bumps. Im really bumbed about this. I went to my mechanic and they put it on the hoist and tried to lift it up a bit more but its still clunking, does anyon else have this problem of the exhust hitting the rear beam while going over any sort of bumps?

I would get a picture but it wouldn't show much.

 

u need another pipe hanger. Im surprised yur mechanical didnt add another one.

 

The exhaust is as high as it can pretty much go without touching the undercarrage. Would putting a thick peice of rubber on the rear beam help to lessen the noise of the clunking?

 

You answered your own question most likely. I'm going to take a guess that you have a 97-99

If thats the case that exhaust won't fit perfect on your car, if you want it to stop banging you're going to have to take it off and rebend it.

 

Nope, I didn't answer my own question, I stated what I had and that I knew they have the same style exhaust.

 

My B-pipe rattles against the fuel tank from time to time. I use a hose clamp on the hanger right behind the resonator (along with the 3 on the mufflers) to keep the exhaust stationary. It helps to limit the play. Only problem is when the clamp falls off (which you will notice) and you'll just have to get under the car and slip the clamp back on.

Easy and inexpensive way if you're looking for one.

 

k I dont think anyone really understands what I am talking about, the exhaust is on there nice and tight, can bearly move it when i pull on it anyway.

just a thought, and i'm not trying to be an ***. If you know where its hitting and took it to the mechanic and can't fix it, there's really nothing we can do. The exhaust as you know should not be hitting the beam. Are you positive that all the hangers are there and they all have good rubber hangers on them?

 

No worries I wont take any offence. Yea all the hangers are good and all the rubber peices are very good, it just boggles my mind how it didn't clunk on my buddies maxima but it clunks on mine.

My mechanic suggest bending the pipe in where it does make contact but it would affect the flow of the exhaust so pretty much cancelling out having a 2.5" exhaust. Im really debating getting that done because it is very loud on the outside when driving by people, and its kind of embarressing if you think about it.

Im starting to wonder if maybe the car has been rear ended before and possible pushed that piece up. Im going to try putting a thick piece of rubber/foam to absorb the sound when it clashes together. If anyone has any other idea's that could help please feel free to say it.

 

I was jus about to suggest the same thing. Then jus tape it down and noise should be gone or at least substantially decreased. There wont be anymore metal to metal noise.

 

Yea well as of right now I need to find some rubber that is heat resistant because I can't have it melting. I will see what I can find, try it out and take some pictures and post it up. Im starting to think the rear beam is on backwards or was pushed up in a rear end collision.
