3rd gear went out on my 5spd...any input appreciated

watsup guys

..So im driving on the parkway today and downshift from 5th to 3rd and i hear shattering and i no longer have 3rd gear ...i'm gonna pull the trans later today

any ideas on what could have went wrong and what would need to be changed?
the car still goes in 3rd gear but it doesn't do anything its like its in neutral...if i can be fixed without getting a new trans that would be great. I was getting ready to sell the car and now this happens, i just want to fix and sell. Would it be cheaper to fix this trans or get a used one.

thanks for any advice
Ray

Oh how I miss the Garden State Parkway...

I'd take a shot at the 3rd gear itself and/or synchro...

It depends on if your going to be working on the transmission yourself...i believe my second gear cost me $70, and not sure how much the snychro was...I'm sure you can call up Dave B at Southpoint Nissan and he'll hook you up with a good price on them...

Look at the throwout bearing and input shaft bearing while your at it...they don't really cost too much, but replacing them might be a pain...

Working on it yourself will make it $100s of dollars cheaper, if you're going to take it to a shop, then you're better off buying a used tranny.

what exactly would need to be replaced? 3rd gear and its synchro?
i can buy a 3rd gear replacement itself? sorry trying to learn as much as i can right now

you have to take it apart and see what all was destroyed. at a minimum you need both 3rd gears, about $280 from Courtesy, you'll probably save a little bit with Dave B @ southpoint but it's still likely to be over $250 I'd guess. quite likely that you'll need a lot more than that as pieces of hardened steel shattering and then floating around with gear teeth meshing is not a good combo. it's conceivable that basically every part in the trans could be destroyed, but probably more likely somewhere in the middle. A few parts destroyed but most still good.

While you're in there it'd be wise to replace both input shaft bearings and both differential bearings, main shaft bearings don't go bad nearly as often but might as well do those as well, and probably 2nd gear synchro just cuz it's the most prone to wear, and 3rd gear synchro since it's the second most prone to wear. it's also common to find that the 1st/2nd sleeve is worn down on the 2nd gear engagement teeth, and 3/4 sleeve often is as well in cars that are shifted with vigor. you can't buy the sleeve itself from nissan so you have to buy the hub/sleeve coupler assemblies as a whole.
